: Inner axle vs. lock-right (front axle Q)

I currently have Newfield joints in my FJ, and they break, but leave the diff and locker alone...

I was told (by more than one person) that if you snap an axle shaft, it will frequently take out a locker with it...

My reason for asking is if I upgrade to Longfield joints, they don't really break, but they have been known to take out the axle shaft...

I've seen first hand a D44 axle shaft snapping, and it took his Detroit out when it snapped, from the sudden load release.

If I break the locker, that's not a quick trailside fix like a birf...

I'm wondering if it might not be better to have a weaker joint, and have that as the known weak point, vs the axle shaft, and possibly ruin the locker?

Tawlk amongst yourselves... :p :D

huh? axleshafts popping breaking a detroit? nah... I have heard of the hub fuses allowing that to happen...I guess it could happen on your locker... but think about this... with longfields, you may not break ANYTHING.

Why can't it happen? The hub fuse releases tension in a similar manner as a snapped axle shaft would... The axle shaft breakage would mean that all the parts involved would be under a much higher tension when it happened though...

And yeah, I might not break anything which would be sweet... But if/when I did, it could strand me in 2wd until I can completely disassemble the diff, as opposed to breaking a semi-easy to replace joint.....

I've heard of people taking out their Detroit when they break an axle...but I think that I have only actually found one person that It actually happened too.

I've also heard that the Detroit internals aren't too expensive...but I checked with my Buddy At West Coast Diffs and it seems that True Trac(?) is really proud of their parts and it's almost cheaper to buy a whole new locker...I dunno

True.. I've got lock-rights in mine, so I dunno.. I'm just thinking of "what's an easier trail fix"??

Since a longfield is much cheaper than a Newfield, I'll probably buy and keep the longfield for a spare, and risk it...

This has happened to several people (yogiaz comes to mind) on the mini-truck board. But all of the lockers were detroits. It seems to strip the same teeth on all of the one's that fail.

ARBs don't seem to have this problem, and I haven't heard of it happening to lockrights either. I'm running longfields and a lockright in my runner... but I haven't broken anything except a driveshaft up front since the SAS, so I can't be much help first-hand.
