I know this is bad. I want to occasionally pull a trailer weighing 2000-2500lbs with a 4runner with 4.88s and a welded rear. Tows will be on back roads at lower speeds no more than 45 mph. Will this hold up for a while? I don’t see how this is that much harder on the rear axle than beating the piss out of it on the trail.

It might not be much harder on the rear axle, but it sure could get scary. With the welded rear the truck is going to want to get sideways on corners. Having a trailer pushing straight ahead is not going to help any. If the trailer has electric brakes you might be ok, but there really is only one way to find out. Take it easy and see what happens I guess.

Shit. I did it for years with an old 1/2 ton Chevy. I bet i flat towed my flatty 10,000 miles with it. I would guess my flatty weighed 3500 lbs at the time. Go for it. Take it easy at first. You'll be fine.
