Too tall/skinny, etc. for rock crawling?

44s seem to be quite wide

Brain storming here...what with all these tube chassis rigs popping up everywhere...:)

I dont have a problem with tall and skinny. I like the idea of the 42"ers. they would be alittle lighter than the 44s.

I will be using (already have them) 42x15 TSL's 16.5"r on my Toy project.... Seems like a perfect size IMHO - wish there was a Bogger in that size :(

I wish there was a SX in that size for better sidewall protection.

Boggers suck :flipoff2: unless your using them for their intended perpose mud bogging.

boggers on rocks for a rockcrawling rig is like a human mountain climber going up rock faces on his elbows, think about it.

BOB! wow, 42's?? how to fit? get the 38.5 sx's youll be a happy camper!

well the rims are 15x10's with the weld on rockstomper style beadlocks. they make the rims more like 11.5" wide. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?s=&postid=562703

Those look nice:D I've got some work to do, whatever size tire I go with - and with all the work I've got ahead, I figured why stop at 38s? Just go for some 42s!

Here's my problem. I've got 35" BFG MTs on there now, with 3" or 3 1/2" offset wheels (whatever Allpro's bead locks are) and my springs are drilled 1 1/2" forward of stock. I've tubbed my inner fender wells all the way back to the body mounts, and on a trail this past weekend, I STILL got the tire all the way back to the body mount:mad: It tore some serious rubber off too - so I've got to come up with something - I just don't understand why with all I've done - I still get the tires all the way into the body mounts so badly that it tears off whole lugs.

I'm thinking about running the truck with the body mounts moved back - the fender wells almost done away with - and no fenders at all, just some tubing. Of course, off comes the top, doors, and extra sheet metal too. BUT - the A/C stays:D

Those are my most recent "thoughts" anyway.

Uh oh....Bob, what are you up to now?

Sure the ac will still keep you plenty cool when it's 115 out.
You'll never miss that top and doors..... :D

Evidently you're getting some very good up travel on your front springs.

Jay

Well, I don't know for certain what I'm up to yet, but, I'm up to something again:)

Yea, I guess I get some good up travel, but I've got a 3" metal bumpstop coming down from the frame, and toyota rubber bumpstops on the spring side.

Just gotta remove some more sheet metal and reposition some stuff I guess!

Did you pay attention to where I live, and the "IMHO" in front of my comment?

How funny - for years boggers were the hot ticket on the rocks, then SX's too over and people swore they were the greatest too....

Sheeple :p

I surely like my boggers 35"s Bob have you seen how much bigger those 42"s are compared to even the 39.5"TSL?   I wouldn't go any bigger then the 38.5 sx if you want an sx or the 39.5 tsl if u can leave behind the sx. of course I won't be going bigger then 35"s on my rig, to short and narrow for anything else except a 37x13 bogger. don't forget the pics!

No, I've never seen the 42s on a rig in person, only the 44s. The orange Jeep a few posts up shows how really huge they are.

To go to any larger tire than I've got (wimpy 35 BFGs - sounds funny:) when I put 'em on I said, "Now I can go anywhere!") I've got to make some major mods to the flat bed, fuel filler neck, and front end especially.

While pondering what to do, I thought that while I'm going to all the trouble, why not consider 42s? And you're right, they're huge! Maybe 38s would work better, but you know how it is - if 38s are good, then 42s should be better!

If clearance issues are taken care of, the only other consideration I'd have would be 3rd member strength. I think the axles (Toy rear and D60hybrid up front) should be able to withstand the tire size.

Hey Bob - here is a general idea of hos freakin HUGE 42's are on our body style truck :)

IMHO - if you plan to go big, skip the 38.5's and go BIG.... Why do through all the work and only go up to 38.5's? :p

Bob Williams
05-30-2002, 11:51 AM
That's unreal! I remember seeing those pics. Wow, it'll take a lot of "trimming" to fit those, but I'm sure it can be done. As I said, 3rd member strength is the remaining concern.

Here's a pic of my toy on 44's. When I get home tonight I can post some pics of the 44's next to 39's that I have on my camera. I also have a set of 38x14.5 SX's and a 38X11 bogger that I can compare them to if you want the pics just let me know.
