With 38.5x14.5 swampers, are there any problems turning? Do the tires hit the frame before you can turn all the way? I have a 3rd Gen Truck with 3/4" spacers. I want to know before I Go buy them.

Thanks for the offer paul, but unless I buy the rims from you, the rims I have are 3 5/8 backspacing and to remount even one of them to test it out would probably suck too much to try. I was hoping someone had experience with this. I really want to run these tires, so I might just buy them anyway and if it doesn't work out, deal with it later. I don't think I am in any hurry because with all my other things I need to take care of, I think I will still be on 35's for the bash. Heres another question for you though.... Did you balance yours at all? How bad is it to drive down the road on them. I bought a tow rig, but I still will probably drive it to local wheeling.

no balancing them, i mounted 3 and mandy mounted one. i drank 1 beer and she drank 3:D :D they ride pretty darn good, but its been awhile since my rig has seen a MT to compare too...if you pump them up to 40 psi you wont even notice them on the freeway....

Any updates on this? Did you buy these tires? How was the clearance? I am looking at 38.5x14.5 SX's and I'm trying to figure out the clearance issues...Thanks

I have them with 3/4" spacers. Rubs the frame out back, and they are right into the springs in the front when I turn.

what about those tires on D44 axles?

I was thinking 2" BS would be okay....

I run no wheel spacers in the front, 58" rear axle on 38.5s with 2" backspaced wheels. With my steering stops set so the longs don't bind, the tires clear the springs by less than 1/8"... they rubbed like mad with 36x12.50s on 3.75 backspacing.

Cool, thanks for the info TNToy...I was thinking I'd be OK with 2" backspacing on the rims but I really wanted to hear it from somebody who has already done it.  for you!

More comparisons ya, found the pics:

36x12.50, 15x8, 3.75" backspacing on right... 1.5" spacer AND 2" BS wheels on the left with 38.5s:

Yup, just the pic.

Both fronts are cut like this:

you know of any pics of a siped thornbird?

TNToy

1. That's grooving, not siping. Sipes look like this - just little cuts:

2. Search for GROOVED and THORNBIRD. Someone posted pics a while back. Personally, I still wouldn't run them. You get the performance of a radial with the weight, ride, and fast tread wear of a bias tire. ;)

well i got 5 thornbirds with 45% + tread for 100$ so lol

so whats the point in siping tires?

should i even bother grooving thornbirds or just run em like they are?

Siping helps for traction in the rain and snow

TnToy hows the toy front holding up to the 38.5sx. you run a lot of the same type of trails i do. so i was just wondering if you like the tire and does the toy axle hold up to it.

I love the tire. Out east, they hold up great. It takes a lote more flogging to break the front in wet trerrain than it would out west on rocks. I run stock inners (have two sets of spares), Longfields, 5.29 gears, and a lockright. No problems so far, but I've only been on 4 rides since I installed the tires about 3 months ago. :)

when is the next time you are planning on going to hot spring park. I will try to go up and meet you there. I've never wheeled with toys befor only heeps. Making me the outcast. and i would love to see how the 38.5s work in a toy.

Chevota, if all goes well some of us may be heading to Hot Springs next weekend. Hopefully I can find a tow rig for that nad not have to sit THAT ride out like the Windrock one. :D

Hey I am planning on doing exactly that to mine when I get them.
Did you grovve them from brand new?
What kind of wear life are you getting from them?
Do you feel the grooving helps traction or ride?

Just getting your thoughts since you have grooved yours. Kinda scary cutting a set of $1000 tires before they ever get on a vehicle...LOL

I've asked this question before, but i never got a good answer.

I'm looking at getting 37x13 boggers on my 61" D44'd Toy.

Will these tires rub if i run 15x10 2"bs wheels???

Maybe someone will know...what about even 38x12.5s on 2"bs?

Did you groove them from brand new?
No. Bought 5 tires used with about 85% tread for $650. That's $130 per tire. :D
What kind of wear life are you getting from them?
No idea. I drive it across town to the trails once every two weeks, ride, and drive it home. Or it gets towed to Hot Springs or somewhere else less than a day away. That said, they will definitely wear out quicker, as there's less rubber touching the road.

Do you feel the grooving helps traction or ride?
Both. Road ride is about the same, but they flex much better at the same PSI than they did before grooving... and they will bite much better than before. Personally, since I see a lot of mud, I wish I would have grooved the fronts the same as the rears.

Just getting your thoughts since you have grooved yours. Kinda scary cutting a set of $1000 tires before they ever get on a vehicle...Yup. If you want to go conservative on the grooving, do it like I did my fronts. It works really well. :)

1. Run 8" wheels unless the 10s are beadlocked or you already have them. The 8s will keep the tire on 100% better at low pressure. That's experience talking. ;)

2. If you haven't outboarded the springs for the D44 you'll be fine. If you have, I have no idea.

Yeah. I had originally thought about getting 8s, but i might move on to fullwidth someday and wide tires and i wouldnt want to be stuck with 8s.

I did outboard the springs. 61" axles with typical perch widths dont like big tires which is why i was asking...

Siping sucks!:flipoff2: At least, out west in the rocks. I bought some tires that were already siped from some knucklehead in the east, think his name was Yota-San, and they chunked pretty badly.:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
