: what's open in AZ for wheelin'- map w/ State Trust, BLM, Nat. Forest Boundaries-
crawler#976 05-29-2002, 03:12 PM hey guy's-
details aren't that great, but it does show more that I've been able to find else where- looks like state land is scattered around by Table Mesa and Florence Junction-
map (http://www.land.state.az.us/images/maps/stateplot.jpg)
As mentioned in an earlier post, State Trust land, Coconino, Prescott and Tonto Forest's are closed, Kiabab and Apache/Sitgreaves Nat. Forest's are now closed too-
It's well posted up here with man'd road blocks at primary roads- but-
Over Memorial Day, the Prescott Nat. Forest isuued three (3)tickets for major violation of closure- punishable by up to $5000.00 fine and up to six (6) months in jail-
later-
JackA 05-29-2002, 08:37 PM When I was looking on a map I had, it was very difficult to make out the different areas. I sure don't want a ticket, but I gotta wheel.
ROKTOY 05-29-2002, 10:47 PM Got this from Sandee:
I've got the list of closed County Roads and it is extensive.
Rather than bore you with that, allow me to point out the few areas that are
open, but your OHV better have a license and insurance. Off-Road plates
won't protect you from ticketing on these routes...
Dewey-Humboldt on both sides of the highway are BLM and you can
ride legally (subject to the above conditions) down to Poland Junction Road.
We
scouted this area recently and the best place to go in is at the powerline
between Humboldt and Poland Junction. Beware of gates with the Forest
Service insignia, that indicates the Forest Boundary and it is closed to
all of us.
Other areas: Badger Springs Rd. off I-17. Plenty of places to
park your trailer and a nice three mile wash. Plus a climb to the former
road, now parking area for hikers. This is BLM/National Monument and is
open. Good for kids and beginners.
Table Mesa West of I-17. It is a combination of BLM, Maricopa
County Parks and Bureau of Reclamation. Probably the widest area for riding
in
our neck of the woods, but it is HOT!!!! The first mile north of Table Mesa
Road is State Trust Lands so continue approx 1 - 1 1/2 North of Table
Mesa Road to the first "Y" before you stop, camp, unload, or park.
The Bloody Basin Road from I-17 to Crown King is OPEN, so a day trip
culminating with a visit to the Mill Restaurant and staying
overnight is one of their Bed and Breakfast's is still okay! The folks in
CK would
appreciate your patronage.
The Antelope Creek Rd. from Mayer to Old Cordes to Bumble Bee to
Black Canyon City is open. All dirt, but you can only go "there and
back"....Once you get down past Bumble Bee, you are on BLM land and you can
actually find a trail or two, but beware of those forest gates...
The Big Chino Rd. is open out to it's hookup with the county road
and that takes you up to I-40. The road is County and most of the land is
either private or State, so watch where you stop. All state lands are
closed to recreation.
All other County roads are closed except to local traffic only. If
you're asking about exceptions, there aren't any.
Camp Wood Rd. to Bagdad, Perkinsville Rd., Drake Rd., Iron Springs,
Williamson Valley, Tonto Rd., Contreras Rd., Orme Rd, Cherry Rd.,
Poland Jct Rd., Thumb Butte Rd., Copper Basin Rd., Walker Rd. , Verde Ranch
Rd., Senator Hwy to the end of the Pavement South of Groom Creek is
open, but so what? All other roads, even ones I haven't mentioned
specifically
are closed, so there you have it.
Florence Junction BLM lands are open but you have to cross State
Trust Lands to get there. Pinal County claim both Cottonwood
Canyon Road and Mineral Mtn Road as "county" roads so if you
continue through to BLM lands (Cottonwood Canyon: BLM is approx
5 miles east of Hwy 79... at the cattleguard) (Mineral Mtn: BLM
land is approx. 3 - 3 1/2 miles south of Hwy 60.... at the gate/
fenceline) DO NOT STOP, CAMP, PARK OR UNLOAD BEFORE ENTERING
BLM LANDS....... ALL State Trust Lands are CLOSED except La Paz
County, Yuma County and Mohave County along the Colorado River.
NO parking, unloading, camping, biking, hiking or
recreation is allowed on State Trust Lands. The Land Dept are
not "advertising" the closures except to publish in the local
paper.................... that's the best we can expect.
White Tanks are CLOSED to all use.............. there are no
"county" roads in this area.......... all recreational trails
thusly EVERYTHING IS CLOSED for the time being.
Alto Pit and Hayfield Draw OHV areas are closed until further
notice.
Forest Service Lands: If in question I suggest calling the local
forest or ranger district for accurate, up to date information.
crawler#976 05-30-2002, 06:15 AM thanks Jay-
that clarifies things more-
gonna be a long summer up here :(
later
ROKTOY 05-30-2002, 06:26 AM More.....from another post.
As you may of heard, the Prescott National Forest and State Land Trust lands are closed to recreation. Evidentally, not everyone is getting the message.
Closed does not mean closed to everyone but local people. Closed does not mean is okay to set foot on these lands.
Closed does not mean it's okay to walk the dog or target shoot or gather wood or pick up trash or go anywhere
EXCEPT: If you are visiting someone within the Forest or State Land boundary on their private land, you may enter on main roads to get to your destination and back and
that's it! The area is being patrolled from the air and on the ground. Don't get caught hanging around anywhere. They are writing tickets!!
Spread the word, the BLM lands are OPEN and you can find a great selection of BLM maps at the Public Lands Information Center on Central Ave. in Phoenix.
Most of these areas are in the warmer parts of the state, but if you can hack it, you can ride there and even camp!
If you have USFS maps, these are the areas marked in yellow, the BLM lands. Make sure if you come upon a State Trust Land sign or a gate with a USFS insignia, turn
around!!! Stay on BLM lands only!!!
JackA 05-30-2002, 10:47 AM So, it sounds like Table Mesa is the place for summer wheeling.

Hey Jack, I saw you mention something about "if it's still open" when referring to Tracy Jordan's Asylum trail. Can you fill me in on some details there?
We were tentatively thinking of heading out that way on the way up to Moab next spring. A few of my buddies wheeled with Tracy a couple years ago when they stopped in Arizona on the way up.
JackA 05-30-2002, 02:05 PM There are two factors that may lead to the end of Asylum. The land the entrance road is on is slated to be developed. Also huge areas of the White Tanks may become a park/preserve. No wheeling allowed. This all sucks. It's a world class trail. There has been something done to block the roads out there already. But we were still able to get in.:D

That doesn't sound very promising. I need to get a copy of that video from Dave. Perhaps we'll try to hookup with some of you guys on the way up to Moab next Spring regardless! You are still wheeling 38's and Toyota axles right?
Did you hear about the guy who was ticketed for using the"fire restriction" paper sign to start his campfire last weekend? No shit....

So if Cottonwood Canyon rd. is a County (public) road on state trust land, just like highway 79, why are they issueing tickets for being on State trust land when you are just on the County road to get to BLM. This according to the above would be OK. Anyone know what's up with all the bullshit tickets that people are getting?
JackA 05-31-2002, 08:16 AM 38's and Toy axles. Works for me.:D
38's are sooooooo last week:rolleyes:
:flipoff2:
ROKTOY 05-31-2002, 11:46 AM Still more.....
Jay
Recreationists..........
The message below was sent out last Sunday............... PLEASE pay
attention to the notation re Florence Juction and access!!!
I have had several posts today stating "they talked with Tammy Pike of ASLD
and she says: "Cottonwood and Mineral Mtn are State Trust Lands........
thusly closed". Note my message below. Being an employee of the Land Dept
this is the ONLY thing she can tell anyone . Technically these roads ARE
STate Land......... but............ Pinal County feels they are
"county".................... as do the Pinal County Sheriff's. Go figure!!!
Both of these roads are within "right-of-way" proceedings where Pinal
County WANTS these roads but the Land Dept. hasn't approved either yet. I
have NO idea what the delay or problem is other than the typical "pissing
match" on a daily basis. Who's right, who's wrong and/or who has the
power.............
RE the post about "can BLM close public lands"............. YEP! Forest
lands are public, be they National Forest or State Forest; BLM; National
Parks; State Parks; National Monuments etc........ are PUBLIC lands. State
lands within a TRUST are not public. Needless to say neither are Indian
lands or private lands. Public lands can be closed for emergency measures.
We're just starting into the hard part of the summer............ these 105+
days are NOT going to help us and the BLM are considering closures. A lot
will depend on what happens re "campfire neglect" in the next few
weeks.......... OR what happens with the Mt. Lemmon fire. It's into BLM
lands now with no foresight of containment. This state most certainly
cannot withstand another fire of this magnitude...........
I am NOT telling anyone to ignore access issues in Florence Junction.
Personally I don't think ANY OF US should be on the lands at this point in
time.............. but......... my posts are to tell what's happening out
there. Florence Junction is an issue with or without closures.
I hope this will clear up some of the questins/issues.............. what
you choose to do is YOUR CHOICE.
Maybe we all need to meet up at the "Show and Shine" and/or Pavillions for
awhile......... We could always "stack" the vehicles and all join in a
"Rain Dance" in the parking lot........... now imagine that scene!! The
agencies can REALLY raise their eyebrows at us!!!
