so nobody knows nothing about mcerdes transmissions? Here in the US their is no options that you speak of. Only tranny for 617 motor is the MB auto and the rare manual from a 190D. No transfer cases at all. Was never in a US 4wd vehicle.
4x4 crowd, and hot rod crowd; are usualy is the leaders in demanding aftermarket products. These two never used the 617 so no real aftermarket products were developed. Except for custom fabbed stuff your shiat out of luck in this catagory. Maybe some Euro guys will pipe in.
are you Euro or US or?

I'm researching doing the same thing in my Scout 2 DD. I'm sure that a custom adapter is required, but what would you guys recommend for a tranny,... since I gotta adapt it up in the first place?

I would like to recommend a five-speed Mercedes automatic transmission (W5A580) because it is used with the 3.7-liter V-6. It features partial engagement in third, fourth, and fifth gears to improve shift feel, economy, and transmission cooling. Like the 545RFE, all other modern Chrysler automatics and Mercedes performance parts (http://www.mbpartswarehouse.com/mercedes_performanceparts.html) of the tranny, the shift schedule adapts to the driver's style, road situations, and other factors. Also, if ever your going to find a transfer case I would like to suggest to put a stamped steel transfer case skid plate mounts to the transmission cross member and fuel tank skidplate to provide off-road protection to the transfer case...
