Took 6th in Trophy Truck, and 10th overall with Pistol. We had some crazy problems, and were stoked with our finish. I'm feeling ambitious today, and I hope to have an article posted this afternoon.

Well first off we should definatly congratulate lance & Pistol for kickin ass!

our story isn't as cool :(

Team Shaffer started 5th our of 6 in class 1700, and by pit one (race mile 18.8) had moved to 3rd place, 3rd place had moved to first and first fell to second.

Somewhere around race mile 28 the 4wd failed, not sure if they spilt the front carrier in half (again) or took the ring & pinion. and at race mile 30 were burried to the bottom of the doors in silt. That was a 30min delay to get moving again, and by then had overheated the rig (270+) but pushed on and made it to pit #2 (race mile 44.5) where the chase crew aired the tires back up to race pressure, pulled the hood off, cooled the radiator, topped off the radiator, re-checked the rig, and gave Mike & Bob water's and had them out in just a few min. When they left pit 2 they had pulled to second place in class.

The Jeep ran strong with the ocasional bang/clunk from teh front end and a few time of locking up then releasing and had made great time getting to pit #3 (race mile 76.7) while we sat on the tailgate eating lunch and watched them motor by in the silt fully getting it.

Our pit crew journey back to pit #4 (race mile 105) was about 5 min, they had 28.7 race miles to get there. we took our time, found a nice spot and set up for them to pass, over two hours goes by with NO contact from the race team, Our chase truck is outfitted with 2 radio's, only one with a microphone, we started scanning the BITD channels for any info, Finally we received word from the race jeep they were moving again, when they pulled into pit 4 mike wanted the rear diff checked out, it had a steady stream of gear oil pouring out, and the bottom 2 stud's on the 9in were broken off, the driveshaft had a fist size dent in it. We quickly put a wrench on the remaining diff bolt's and the leak didn't slow a bit, we then noticed the left front ball joint was stretched and the wheel was cambered badly, and the front diff was binding more frequently. we had 23 minuites to fix EVERYTHING to keep them in the race.

With the fear of losing the rear diff is the leak got worse between pit's where we could keep topping it off, we made a team decision to call the race :( We had a second chase truck set up for fueling sitting at pit #5 with our trailer hooked to it. we had the trailer brought over and loaded it up.

as alway's we had a Blast and put everything we had into the race, both as the race team of Mike & Bob, but the chase crew consisting of Myself, Jason Arnold, and David Arnold, along with our ride along Johnny Lamana from RP Films. we checked, and re-checked, and re-checked the rig, and our gear to be as ready as possible, and were pumped for the chance to kick ass!

My story isn't that exciting. I went out to help the Sproule's from Canadia...A
They have an Aceco "Truggy" (Trophy truck front end buggy rear end as the origional Scalzo definition goes). Front engine, th400, driveshaft to chassis mounted quick change diff. I saw lots of people take out tires/wheels in the time trials. At least 1 car took out both lefts on like the 2nd turn. We qualified 10th in the time trials. No flats, nothing broken, just put some fuel in at pit 5 and took pictures (other then some testing & shock adjustments 2 days before). 3rd across the finish line, 4th overall, 2nd in 1500, drank some beer, and sobered up in time to drive home that night.

TT#11 Dondel at the time trials (he is really doing like 10mph in that pic...I just did a good job with the panning :) )
