Wow, that's like 2 pictures per part :D

Nice arcticle, would've made it easier when i rebuilt mine. You might want to make a note about the brake assembly, you have the old style which is what I started with. If you need to rebuild it, you have to switch to the newer style which has a single big ring instead of the little pucks - requires you to change the ratchet.

Yea, I know, silly overkill, and too damn heavy...but it was all my supplier had with a big enough "frontage" to cover the upper and lower mounting holes for the winch. Sure gave the Sp125 a workout...but with good prep anything is possible!

hey Bill, great 4 Banana article, it's very generous of you to take the time and effort to share this. much like the 'Bending 101 article, i have thoroughly enjoyed pretending i'm hard at work:emb3: while being engrossed in this cool stuff.:D

is there any potential worry or concern with all that grease virtually cheek to jowl with the braking pucks and disc?
or was that an incredibly stupid question, all the ball bearings sealed away by a flange that i didn't see or something? you removed all the grease after install, but before final buttoning up, with brake cleaner? curious about that aspect. thanks!:)

To much time???

Hardly :flipoff2:

Patience and dedication maybe.....I started the strip / article in January !!!!

UZI - bloody good question.

I did wipe up a bit of the excess grease you see in pic 52.

So far it's not been a problem at all.

I can tell you, if you tighten the little bolt holding on the brake pawl...the brake doesn't work for poop :p

Great Article! Question; your motor was in good shape? did you do anything to it. We have an old 8274 that the motor seems to be shot (got it that way), any suggestions for getting the motor serviced, I assume at a starter shop??? What would I expect to pay? I know that I can get a replacement motor for around $250 if I remember right. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Mel,

Well, as you can see. my motor didn;t look all that great...but it cleaned up and works fine...make sure to test yours as I showed with a battery and jumper cables befpre you junk it.

If it does turn out to be junk....you could find an electric motor shop (guys that do starters, or even an industrial place that does motors for compressors and the like....they ought to be able to give you a good free estimate if you take it in and show them.

On the other hand...the newer 8274-50 motor is even more powerful and faster....so easy to justify the $$...Hey...it's a fix AND upgrade....is there any sweeter way to spend money :D

Good luck

If you do switch to the newer motor you also need to replace the motor gear. The new style 8274 has a splined gear rather than the keyed gear like the older winches.
