hey all. I have a 96 Jeep cherokee 4.0L auto trans thats giving me some problems. when I engage the 4wd I get this bad popping and grinding noise under the initial load but once I start driving it seems to be fine. I took off the transfer case and started looking around in there but nothing looked bad. all the gears were good and the chain looked normal. after I reinstalled the transfer case it still did the same thing. could it maybe be somewhere else? thanks

you had trans problems, so you took apart your t-case, and you still have the problem.
yes, your problem could be somewhere else, like www.jeepsunlimited.com

the transmission isnt giving me the problems. I just mentioned that I had an auto transmission for those who were concerned about what type of tranny I had

Pirate really isnt a place for this kind of stuff. At least not the hardcore section of Pirate.
Your shift linkage is bad, or your bearings could be bad. I would check the shift linkage first.
if you are using a lowering tc kit sometimes you have to open some space to fit the shifters
