Just though I would pass this little bit of info along, hey it worked for me. For years now every time I fill up the old 40 with gas there is this nasty gas smell that permiates the cab. I have changed every damn hose and tightened all of the clamps to no avail. Well after trying every thing else I thougt what the hell I am going to drill a vent hole in the gas cap and see what that does. Well this weekend I went to the maze district of the canyonlands in Utah and the only time I could smell gas was when I was at the gas station. Even the little woman (who has for years complained about the smell) mentioined that she no longer smelled gas inside the cab. My only regret.....I WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE IT YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:flipoff2:

Jeff,
Thanks! I plan on trying that on my Pig...It smells like gas everytime I drive it!
Missed you in Moab this year!

 This must be a common FJ40 thing. Mine does it too but I think it may have something to do with the pin hole leak in the bottom of it :shaking: I will be glad when I put the fuel cell in the back.

I suggested this to someone's post not to long ago but most people shot it down saying that when you side hill that gas would leak out the hole. Has this happend to you yet?

When I get on a side hill it leaks a bit, so its probably not the best option.

I think this is a good idea. So what if you leak on the side hills, if you were a j--p you would leak evey time you climebed a hill.
There are three lines on the right rear sid of the tank right behind the pass seat. Take one of those lines and vent it. Eliminating you pressure problem.

Venting one of these lines is a option. But how? I guess you could put a small air filter on top of one of the lines but then you would just be relocating the gas smell to where ever the filter is. At least it would get the gas smell out of the cab though. Why dont other vehicles have this problem? Also, if you vent the tank to outside air wont your gas slowely evaporate?

I have a plastic OEM replacement tank in my pig..
P/O put it in, and since it's a 305, all the vent lines were capped. That was the problem.. he capped the lines with rubber vacuum plugs, and over time, the gas vapor ate the caps off.. so I was leaking out the top of the tank on any hill, and I don't mean a little... Going up a hill at Uwharrie, this was the conversation between me and my S/O:
her:"I smell gas"
me: "look behind your seat, do you see a little bit of gas coming out of the tank filler?"
her: "nope"
me: "what?"
her: "it's a TON of gas"
me: "put out your cigarette honey"
Anyway... I pulled the tank, and that's when I saw the caps rotted off. This is how I fixed all the smell and leaks:
1. I pulled the unneeded vent fittings, and threaded a bolt 3/4 in, and ran a bead of non-hardening, gas-resistant sealant on the threads, then ran them all the way in, and compleetly sealed around the bolt heads. I did leave one vent fitting on (more on that in a minute)
2. Changed to a non-vented gas cap.
3. Ran about 8 feet of 5/16" fuel hose from the vent fitting out the rear, and up the roll cage, ending ~2 feet behind the passenger's headrest, capping the end of the line with a small fuel filter. (To keep bugs out)
I had thought a one-way valve would be awesome, to let air in to replace the fuel being used, but would not allow fuel out if I rolled over.. NOPE! Needs air flow in and out of the tank..
This combo was tested on a 45+ degree slope, where I was resting on the exo cage... not a drop leaked. I'll have to put it completely on its side for it to leak... Here's a picture of the test, not yet all the way over onto the exo, but you get an idea.

On hot days when the gas is expanding in the tank can you smell the vapors?

I haven't smelled any vapor.
I suppose, if there was a very gentle breeze blowing from the rear right of the rig, I *might* be able to smell a bit. Only if I was stopped.
Since I don't plan on ever using the hard top, and don't yet own a soft top, it's not much of an issue. I hadn't thought of that until just now. I suppose an extension could be added from the outlet of the filter out the back for when the soft top was used. (another few feet of fuel line is cheap) It's not like my cruiser is air tight by ANY means anyway. I got so much air through the firewall even with the hard top on, all I could smell was the various leaky fluids.. (now fixed)

I have had the cruiser out on the rocks in the canyon lands at a pretty good side hilling angle and did not see any sign of leakage. Even if it did leak a little it is still better than smelling the fumes all the time. What can I say it is a cheapfix that works.....:flipoff2:
