A fellow Tin Bender named Frosty is doing just what your talking about, however he hasn't finished yet. As far as smog goes you might want to talk to the Smog Ref.

I have a Toyota 2.2L diesel motor I was thinking about installing in a Sammy. It has the same motor mounts as a 22R. The bellhousing will bolt to any of the R150/R151 trannies. The idea was to bolt up a R150 2WD trans and make a custom drive shaft to the zuki transfer case so I could retain the zuki axles, etc. I doubt I will ever do the project though, not enough time or $$.

Anyway, I was told by DMV here in Oregon that the vehicle would just have to pass a simple diesel emissions test, and that they never fail. There would not be any smog or cat equipment required. One advantage to going with a diesel motor I suppose.
