Is anyone running coilovers or air shocks on their XJ? If so can you post pics of how it's mounted

I will be mounting some air shocks soon I will post pics once I am done

It should be easy to make a mount that bolts to the upper spring seat area.

That would likely make your rig about 20 feet tall.

It seems possible to use a T&J upper shock mount and a poly lower mount. As long as the T&J part spreads the load into the chassis enough.

I bet Poly would sell the axle mounts seperate.

Use shorter coilovers. I guess you could rebuild the area to be a bit shorter.

Twelve-inch-stroke, 2.5-inch dual-rate King coilovers with matching bumpstops soak up the terrain. To spin the 33-inch BFG Baja T/As, a 4.56 ring-and-pinion set now lives behind the diff cover.

I'm sure he could fit 35's+ if he cut more. Might be able to make something like this to mount the coil-over like a strut http://www.euro-audi-parts.com/mancemountsa.jpg

Perhaps...but I would have to go with either a 14 or 16 in the front to make it worthwhile, and my lift height is very much under what's usually done to fit 39.5s (I have about 6" lift from the springs), and the whole things is calibrated for significantly more droop than uptravel. Different specs for different terrain.

Well, in your case what are your goals? If you are after more overall travel there is not much room to do anything but add lift in the front (AFA angle of shock/Coilover). You could decided to maximize droop by running dual rate with one pretty light spring, this would allow you to stay low by sacrificing up travel.
Without fabbing something like hoops through the hood it would be difficult to run a 16" coilover in the front and stay low.

this is my old xj, and it had coilovers up front. dont flame the paint it was my dads idea, and got painted over. too bad i had ended selling that heep for about 1000 bucks

Here's the difference...compare the above pic of the jeepspeed truck to the same shot of mine:

And yes, in my case, I would absolutely just cut out the entire factory upper coil area and throw some hoops in there. Right now I have a set of 12" shocks up there which give me plenty of travel for what I do.

http://www.phatserver.net/~chris/XJbuild/031107/DSC01591.JPG

The 12" coilover would be a bit taller than just a 12" shock though, and the 12" shock is already mounted higher than the coil, so even to run shorty coilovers I'd have to change a bunch of stuff around. I'm pretty happy with how the front is dialed in right now though and I doubt I'd see much advantage from running coilovers there.

The rear, however, is a different story and I'll probably be changing out the short coils back there for some 14" coilovers within a year.

Now I see the difference. It's your front diff, it's on the wrong side...:flipoff2:

Looking good. It's got a nice mean looking stance.:smokin:

So do you ever street you rig?

The diff is on the side that jeep intended for it to be on. It only got switched when AMC got in there and messed everything up. :)

Street...yeah. About 160 miles in the last two weeks. Haven't had it much above 60 MPH yet but it's nice and smooth at speed, handles pretty well, and stops fine. On beadlock'd bias IROKs and 8 psi. My friend drove it briefly to go get lunch, and everyone is amazed at how streetable it really is, especially with cold A/C and a nice stereo amp. :) The ratios in the NV4500 are way too wide for it to be a hotrod though.

It's insured, registered, and has a NJ modified height inspection sticker good through November.

I have a TF999 I'll swap you even up for that NV4500 set-up so you can join the hotrod guys.

Nah, I've got the 5.9 V8 in my ZJ for going fast.

I don't wheel automatics. Evar.

Since you asked

As you can see the JS truck is ~9.5 headlights tall and your XJ is just under 11. Putting your tires onto the JS XJ would add what, about 3.25 inches of height? How tall is one headlight, 4"+?

I would like to see some more ideas. I am running out of room under mine, I would like to add some air bumps and I think that I may have to go to coil overs to make room. (shucks huh).

Mcstiff

It would most likely be easier to figure our how to mount the air bumps inboard, or maybe where the stock front bumps are vs tubing the front end (unless you are just looking for an excuse). If you really just want to do it, I think it would be cool to go all out and get rid of the unibody in front of the firewall and start from scratch.

Something like this (http://www.lightracing.com/lightracingJounceChoose.html) might be able to fit inside of a coil like the adjustable top mount thing.

Are those things rated to handle hard bottoming out? Like better than a regular shock?

Anyone else running coilovers on XJs?? Thinking about switching over, and looking for more tech!

I'm sitting at around 6in of lift right now, and would like to keep it that way or slightly higher (no much though).

I thought I had read somewhere that 14in coilovers would put the mounts through the hood slightly?? Is that about where it would end up? with around 6-7in lift?

Also, what spring rates are you guys running? I will be getting it weighted and try to figure out the calculator, but would like to know what others are doing.
