Hi guys,

I don't post much up here, I am a cruiserhead from over on MUD and pirate lurker. I am desperate for some help. I hope you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

I have a PS box I bought off a guy - told me it was a scout box. I am not so sure it is. I can't find a hose or a fitting that fits it! Did IH ever have a an o-ring fitting in a PS box? I need a year and model so I can at least reference a parts manual.

It is a saginaw box and the local guy who rebuilt it said it was ununual because it was an o-ring fitting. I didn't think anything of it at the time. Now I can't find a hose to fit it. I've heard the F-250 boxes are very similar so I tried the Ford o-ring fitting to eliminate that possibility.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Andy

1980 Scout boxes were O-ring.... might be what you have.

Post a picture, then we could atleast give you a physical ID of the box.

Yes, its an 80 box and I went round and round at napa. Supposedly there are no replacement lines for that box. You need to find another application with that same size thread and O ring. Cut it off the hard line. Buy a scout II hose. Cut the same end off of it. Put the O ring fitting on the scout line and re-double flare. Thats for scouts though.

You can probably have it made at a hose shop(which is hit or miss some times)

Or you can simply intall the small fitting adapters in the the box to convert the oring fittings to flares.

If you look for my hydroboost write up you will find the adapters.
Maybe check the FAQ.

I think they were about $14.

I needed it now. Most of the time I don't have time to wait when problems like that jump up. That was the fastest solution at the time. I just make sure I don't use 80 boxes anymore :D

Damn! You guys are top notch! 1980 = pita. Got it. Too late!

Bill - got a link handy? That might do the trick. Not a member here so search is out. I'll begin searching FAQ now...

Binderbound - Lewd is a good buddy of mine. I dig the cage. Any suggestions for a similar application? I couldn't find any. The hose shop is working on it - he made me nervous when he said something about high budget applications for custom built fittings... NAPA... (eye roll)

How soon do you need it? Do you ever make it down around the Portland area? The only reason I ask is I know of a good hose shop that built me a new powersteering hose for my pickup using one of the ends off of the original. He's been quite helpful with a few other projects and seem to really know his stuff.

I don't know if he could help you out over the phone, but if you know what you are looking for, he may have something. He's located in Clackamas OR, right off of 212. Really easy to find. Just a thought.

From the FAQ-
http://www.justih.org/Binder-Bench/showthread.php?p=13037#post13037

"I found a really neat way to convert the late model o-ring fittings to the old style inverted flare that the scout uses.

They are bushings made by Lee manufacturing.
818-768-0371
Pressure 40620 $3.97
Return 40630 $3.97
They tap right in using a 1/4" bolt and nut as a driver!
Once in, the stock scout hoses bolt right up!

Best part is they are about $10 total to your door."

Just don't get the guy talking - unless you like talking~!

Thanks guys!

Andy

That's would be the ones I used 3 years ago.

Still working fine.
I used 2 standard scout flare hoses with no mods during my hydroboost install.

Personally, I don't like having to modify stuff to use it.
If you break on the trail or on the road, it's nice to walk into a store or JY and just buy what you need. Or at least be able to order it.

That is funny shit right there! Just think about all the stuff you have on your scout that is modified.

You have to modify almost everything you buy anymore, to fit a scout.

True, I do have a lot of different stuff on mine but most of it is just stuff transplanted on.

Like Mark pointed out with the brakes, we are used to breaking/bending axles and needing to replace them. I carry a spare front and rear shaft and ujoints. But the rotor...you normally only trash them if you lose a wheel. And even then you can just close off that wheels brake line.

Not much can be done for brackets...but I do carry scrap steel and an OBW.

I guess the distr shaft in my distr is non-standard although the pickup and module are all stock GM.

Rear drive shaft is custom made though...

Guess it's just how much you want to carry for spares.

go to any hot rod shop and get a high pressure AN hose and then buy the right fittings for the ends. Nice thing about that is if you ever change boxes you simply thread on another end.

Doesn't IHonly (http://www.ihonlynorth.com) carry a fancy hose for this application, too?

Looking on the NAPA website it lists different part numbers for '75 and '80 Scouts. They list a NPS 71979 for the '80 Scout. Strange thing is that they only show the 4 banger engine for 1980. The big 3 all went to metric o-rings in the 1980's so you could also try a hose for a Bronco or Blazer. Good luck.

EDIT:

Napa also lists a universal PS pressure hose:

Item#: NPS71498

Price: $20.99
Attributes:
Imperial Length:37"
Type of Ends:Male (O-Ring) x Male (O-Ring)
Thread Sizes:18mm x 16mm

Edit... Bills rig is high modified and all parts can be had at the auto parts store. The only problem is remembering what to ask for.
Was that the 87 or 98 Ford or Dodge part I use LOL. I need to make a list and stick in my Scout, along with some napa parts number too.
