: My 22re doesn't want to play?
kwhobbie 05-30-2002, 09:06 AM I have had the same problem now for 4 months. I can start the car two times but on the third time the car just cranks. I wait a while and try it again. It works fine! But now it won't start in the mornings or even at all sometimes. I did plenty of searching and I found it was possibly the ignitor/coil. Well I replaced it last night and no dice? This problem does not happen while I'm driving it just won't start? Does any body have any other ideas? I can only drive it in the evening, I'm not sure why it works then. I park it thinking its fine then when I get up to leave for work it won't start it just cranks and cranks! this sucks please help! Maybe someone know of a TSB that I can look at? Thanks for your help!!!!!
red86yota 05-30-2002, 09:58 AM maybe it's flooding??
how does it smell when it finally does start up? I don't know about the 22RE ( I have a 22R) but on my RX-7 when it floods, I just pull the fuse for the injectors, crank it for a few seconds, put the fuse back in, and it starts right up.
EWong 05-30-2002, 10:08 AM From yer post
> start it just cranks and cranks!
Ok - starter works - right? (its not "clicking - its spinning - right)
I assume from yer post that once it runs, it runs OK.
Back to basics -
air?
fuel?
spark?
Since it runs OK when its running, Id start with stuff related to starting (like the CSI if its EFI)
kwhobbie 05-30-2002, 10:19 AM yes the starter is cranking fine, I'm not sure if it can flood? I read some other posts that said a fuel injection system won't flood. But I could be wrong its just what I read.
EWong 05-30-2002, 10:29 AM Yes - you can flood an EFI setup....
Leaking CSI will do that.
I assume you have EFI?
to clear it - pull the boot/pip thing off the TB and prop the butterfly open to let it vent.
Then the question is - why does it flood (or is it still an issue of bad / no spark)
NOODLES 05-30-2002, 03:07 PM the igniter box is probably bad. Take one off a buddies pickup and plug it in. if thats whats it don't give it back and tell him he needs a new one.
iregret 05-30-2002, 07:44 PM Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire...:nuke: BOOM!!:nuke:
Well, it runs, somtimes. It starts, sometimes. Does it start better when it is warm or when it is cold. Does it idle okay? I'm thinking that it has more to do with the cold start injector or some other fuel delevery problem.
Make sure that the cap/rotor are at least okay looking. Make sure that the spark plug wires are not exposed any where and are connecting to the cap and plugs. Also, make sure that there is a good connection between the cap and the coil. Pull the plugs and take a look at them. Do they all look the same?
Is the fuel pump working? When was the last time that you changed the fuel filter? Could it be clogged? Supposedly you can check the resistance of the fuel injectors and tell if there okay. I've never done it, I just had them cleaned instead.
Have you tried a self diagnostics? At least then the vehicle will "tell" you what it thinks is wrong... if anything.
Of course I am assuming that this is fuel injected. Please tell me if im wrong.
kwhobbie 05-31-2002, 12:07 PM It is a 22rec fuel injected EFI toyota engine. I have replaced the ignitor and It has no been starting in the mornings. I also put new spark plugs/wires/distributer cap in it. It worked that evening when I started it up but after that no dice! I'll try and test the CSI thanks for all the help!!!!!
kwhobbie 06-02-2002, 11:15 AM I just ran a code check and it came up with code 6 and 11?
Code 6 is: 1.Ignitor Circuit (what circut?)
2.Ignitor (I changed that)
3.Distributor (how the #@#! can I tell if thats bad?)
4.ECU (same comment as #3)
Code 11 is: 1.Air conditioner switch (it blows but not cold air)
2.Throttle position circuit (the who?)
3.Throttle position sensor
4.ECU
I tried to check the cold start injector and it was giving me the same resistance that my friends V6 was so I don't think thats the problem. I was going to swap out the fuel filter to but when I got under it I couldn't find it can anybody tell me where its located on a 22re efi? I hope its not on top of the dam tank!!! thanks for any help in advance
Bonzai 06-02-2002, 02:16 PM The fuel filter is located on the passenger side of the block neatly tucked under the intake...
The code 11 is more than likely your tps needing adjusting...(if you are lucky)
Can't help you on the code 6 tho....
kwhobbie 06-02-2002, 03:03 PM jjeeeeeeeeesssssusssssssss Christ!! that filter is hard to get at. Do you really think that the TPS can give me trouble when starting it cold? Why does it need to warm up?
Polar 06-02-2002, 04:12 PM did you check the timing....the pick-up was bad in mine. hard as hell to start but ran ok. the timing was way the hell off. new pickup good to go. also pull a plug and crank it to see if your getting any spark (when it wont start).
