: does necessary castor angle change w/ wheelbase?
JeeperJake 05-30-2002, 09:24 AM this is probably a stupid question, but it just popped into my head and i had no idea. obviously the pinion angle will change with an increase in wheelbase, but should the castor be the same or should it change with wheelbase increase as well? thanks!

Why would the angle needed to make a steering axle track straight have anything to do with wheelbase?
The Rockslut 05-30-2002, 09:35 AM THe only thing that would need to change with wheel base is the lowering of your pinion angles.
Aggro 05-30-2002, 09:35 AM yes, it does.
JeeperJake 05-30-2002, 09:41 AM yes, it does???? uh, you are the oddball - explain yourself

I may be an oddball indeed, but you explain to me why a dually, longbed, crewcab has less castor that say a swb blazer...

I don't know. You explain to me why some scouts have less caster than those big trucks:p
I think it's all manufacturer choice as to what will make a specific vehicle track the way the design engineers feel it should. But don't ask me I'm a chemical engineer:D
oh wait- could axle width have something to do with it;)

Hell, I couldn't tell ya- I am just stirring the pot!:D
The amount of weight the vehicle has is a determining factor in how much castor is needed to make the wheels track straight w/o steering input.
SWB rigs are usually light, and need more castor....
There are more reasons, but that is one quick one....

You better quit with that tech:flipoff2:
Old Scout 05-30-2002, 10:55 AM From a Alldata Tech:
" Well for 91, Castor is listed for V body (which is 4WD Blazer and Sub) as + 8 degrees Nominal. I don't see anywhere that wheel base is listed for any alignment spec. Everything is the same for Blazer or Suburban."
so a K5 and a Suburban have the same axle/castor!
BTW 91 last year for solid axles
JeeperJake 05-30-2002, 10:56 AM so, someone said in another post that its better to have a little too much caster...so what would be a good angle for fullwidth chevy 60 on a extended jeep (not that it matters :) ) ? and what is the stock GM 60 angle?

Doesn't make it right:D
Probably a lot cheaper for GM to buy one style of 10 bolts for trucks, than two.

Just run what it came with stock. I fully believe it was up to the design engineers to make it what they want, it had something to do with the axle width, and something to do with vehicle weight. Just get your axles first, or did you already pick them up?
JeeperJake 05-30-2002, 11:41 AM workin on getting a set as we speak...
