well this is probably an even dumber ? but is that a pretty good rear....they guy said that he had 4:56 gears put in it and detroit lockers in front and rear...when you put it in drive or reverse from park it makes a loud clunk noise...my mechanic told me that the rear was 'worn' but that it didnt need to be replaced, i would just have to live with the noise until i had money to replace it...i guess my ? is is the 9:25 a good rear to just get another one of those or is there another that can be put on fairly inexpensive thats stronger

well, here is a simple test. jack up both tires, and slowly spin one of them. if it is an open diff, the other tire will spin the other way. if you feel some sort of mechanical clicking (think ratchet type sound) then you probably have a auto locker of some sort. this is confirmed if you then spin it much faster, and it will engage and stop because the driveline is still hooked up. if it was a limited slip, you should not be able to spin it at all. but just to make sure, if you cannot spin it right away, try and spin it back and forth a bit just to see if you can get a locker to dis-engage if it was because of some bind that was in it.

hope that helps, i know nothing of that specific rear axle.

Did your mechanic check your u-joints while he was under there?

yea those were checked out and said to be fine...no play in them or anything...after he told me the tranny was worn i got on here and read a couple of threads talking about how people were hearing clunking after they installed the lockers so maybe thats the problem...i really appreciate the help tho guys...thanks:smokin:

Detroit lockers clunck quite a bit and it is normal for them to do so.

however, not usually when you put them in gear, just when turning.
