: Give the Stupid Newb Suspension Advice
schuss 05-30-2002, 02:24 PM Okay, I'm new to this whole rockcrawling thing, as I'm in the east and most of our rocks are covered by mud and trees. However, I happen to have quarried rock in my backyard, and now have a rock garden that nearly matches a lot of stuff I see you guys thrashing on out west. Problem? I took the zuk out to it today after installing my new clutch cable (old one seized and took other parts with it), and it is very obvious that I:
A. Need more clearance
B. need more suspension flex
I currently have flat stock springs, so I need to get new ones anyway, what I'm looking for is ideas. I have yota axles that I'm going to sling under it, so that end is covered. I'm not rich, I'm going to cut up the sheetmetal, and one of my friends owns a 4x4 shop, so any welding and whatnot I can lean on him for. I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck, as I'm a poor college student. So hit me with your best recommendations, as I've read all the threads around here and still am struck by indecision (so please no "USE THAR FAWKIN SEARCH BUTTIN" crap please). This is a blank slate, lets scribble on this fawker. :D
rockzooki 05-30-2002, 02:46 PM start with a springover, best bang per dollar by far. id recomend a kit, but you can piece it together.youll need spoa pads, dshaft spacers, brakelines, and new lower shockmounts. youll also have to do something with the steering too, either a z'd link or a drop pitman arm. there will be other small stuff too, but this should get ya started.:D
Rockrat 05-30-2002, 03:48 PM I agree with rockzooki but also rec. yj's all the way around
with some rat shackles on the back:D
schuss 05-30-2002, 03:56 PM The YJ's are a very real possibility for me, as my springs are shot anyway. I've seen varying answers, but what would a SOA with YJ's net me in terms of suspension lift? And by rat shackles I take it you mean revolver style?
Shrock 05-30-2002, 03:56 PM hombrew YJ SPOA, 33's and GRS1, is great bang for the buck. There is enough info on this site to figure out how to home brew the YJ SPOA.
33's will fit.

I hadn't heard the term rat shackles before, but I'd guess that he is referring to missing links, aka folding shackles, hinged shackles, etc.
I have the old Canyon State setup which is YJ with a shackle reversal. I've got the RRO 4.5" spring over on there and ended up with about 9-10 inches lift overall. Currently I have the 4.16:1's and 31x10.5 TSL's on 15x8 2.75bs wheels. I could easily clear 33's with no problems.

samiguy 05-30-2002, 05:58 PM hey, where in NH, I live in Connecticut now but I am from Manchester and wheel up there sometimes. I know there are a few other sami guys close to there that might help you out
mikrosilakhan 05-30-2002, 07:24 PM My stocker springs just went from flat to broke monday dude. Defiantley do soemthing with them while there all apart. Im negetiating for a set of YJ's right now. I hope i get them soon cuz my samis down. You can do CJ front spriings into the sami rear to wich is supposed to be a pretty basic setup. there 2 inches wide also so it makes it alittle handier. I have some but why bother going halfway? If im gonan do the work id rather do alittle more and figure out the yj deal
nuttzack 05-30-2002, 10:17 PM ahhhhh! COILS! or.......YJ's front and rear. SUMO's and toy axles. Now you have yourself a sammi:flipoff2:
mud-magnet 05-31-2002, 06:04 AM i think rat shackles that scott is referring to are missing links that are made by himself, hence the name"RAT shackles" and his nick "rock-RAT".................:D
