: SM465 - poping out of 2nd?
ALLOCKEDUP 05-30-2002, 03:20 PM I just got my cruiser back on the road after a 4 year restoration project where I installed a TBI 350 and I put an SM465 behind it. Today on my first test drive - when I was in 2nd gear and put my foot in it - The tranny would pop out of second? I have synthetic oil in it. I got the tranny from a wrecking yard several yearc ago and had a friend look inside who rebuilt them and said it looked ok to him. As I recall the syncros were slightly worn but they looked ok. Is it time to pull it out and have it gone through or is there something else to try first? Thanks for your thoughts in advance. :usa: :usa: :usa:
Sounds like a piece of crap. I would try getting good trade value out of the rig. Maybe a killer rock crawler...
Scout Dude 05-30-2002, 03:29 PM I have heard of 465's with this problem, bu I thought it was 3rd gear that always has issues. There is some fix for it though. (I think it's syncro related)
first thing to check is that the shifter is not hitting the body and not allowing it to go all the way in gear. Then I would probably suggest synchros.
ALLOCKEDUP 05-30-2002, 03:41 PM I guess it is 3rd gear - I think of it is L , 1, 2, 3 but what ever the case it it the third highest gear. The shifter is close to the heater but it does not touch when the rig is sitten still. I will go back out and see if the shifter hits the heater when I am gasen it.
Mark - you always seem to be the first to reply whenever I post - you must have your secratary monitor the board for you so you know the second something comes up or you do no work and watch the board (all sections) yourself! I think the secon is the most likely ?????!!!!!!! :D
Nope, first time I looked at it today. Nice try, though.
You're not alone. Mine does the same thing, and I've heard of others that have the same problem. Unfortunately I can't remember for the life of me where there's info on the fix, and a search here turned up nothing(although I SWEAR I've seen it discussed on here). I remember something about a sleeve that wears thin, and installing either a larger sleeve or bushing or something will fix the problem. Too bad I've most likely confused you even more, rather than helped, LOL.
NOODLES 05-30-2002, 05:33 PM I would think the bearings are starting to go out in either the main shaft or cluster the synchros help it go into gear not hold it in gear. Also could be detents or a deformaty in the case.
ALLOCKEDUP 05-30-2002, 06:53 PM I drove it again and the heater is not pushing it out of gear. This is certainly something that I am going to need to fix. Right foot goes down tranny pops out of gear. THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
the shift forks are notorious for wearing the nylon off them and then you cannot engage gears fully
Erik D_lux 05-30-2002, 07:44 PM Mine pops out of 3rd also. I just hold it there and it is fine. I usually dont stay in 3rd anyway
Pin Head 05-30-2002, 09:11 PM Top 3 reasons for popping out of 3rd:
1. Excessive wear on the 3rd gear bearing or bushing on the main shaft allows the gear to wobble on main shaft.
2. Excess wear on the clutch gear/hub or 3rd gear dog teeth.
3. Wear on the shift fork so that clutch hub won't engage completely.
They all require disassembly and replacement to fix and in order of increasing expense, they are 3, 1, 2 assuming that the main shaft and gears aren't bad.
ouibus 05-31-2002, 01:02 AM I had the same problem with an old SM465 of mine. Bennett on this board also had the problem and he found a way to solve it. It was a faulty part from the factory were they were produced. It would last for a while, then wear out really quickly. He found a kit from some company that replaces the part and makes it hold in gear fine. Look him up, and I am sure that he can help you out. I think that the kit was only $15 or $20.
Bennnett is actually his screen name. HTH Thomas
TxCruzr 05-31-2002, 08:09 AM Sounds like my old SM420...Not sure if it could be the same problem but on SM420s there were 2 styles out and mine had a miss&matched top and bottom...not sure if that is possable to do with a 465...

atroader 05-31-2002, 04:05 PM this is taken directly from one of my emails:
look at the snap rings betweem 3rd gear and the counter gear( that the big gear by the way). This is where the problem is. the bevel cut third gear while meshed puts a strain and torque on the snap rings and wears them and eventually they break. because movement can occur against the snap rings the fix is simple , remove the countergear from the shaft and discard the two snaprings and replace with a sleeve. (pictured) it occupies the area outlined in yellow. This simple fix was designed by "Tourist Auto" in Salt Lake City,They have been in the manual tranny business for 75 years. They were extrememly helpful when I walked into their shop . There phone is 801 -364-5743. They sell the sleeve for $7.50 . You will need to tell them what tranny you have by examining the trannsmission bolt holes and tell them wether they are threaded or not. (they can explain more) I guess some years were two of the holes wre threaded. Now that I think about it though I dont think this matters unless you are doing a total rebuild.(rebuild kits with bearings were$190 I think.
if anyone simply MUST have the pics, send me your email at atroader@yahoo.com and I'll email them to you
Jonathan
The sleeve from Tourist auto does fix the 3-4th pop out problem.
If you call Tourist they are great guys to take the time to talk with you...ask for Gregs "dad" he has been there forever, if he is not in Greg will set ya up! Last time I was in they had about 30 sm 465s on the floor goin out to UPS for their trucks.. they know their sh*t
