New guy here. I need to get the rear drums off my 14 bolt. It's a 77 if that helps any. I got the axle out, then I don't know where to go from there.

take the bearing retainer nuts off of the wheel bearings, then slide the whole drum assembly off unless the shoes are really bad, then you might need to loosen the self adjuster from the back acess hole with a flat screwdriver.

i just did mine about 8 hours ago. yeah like he said thers this little thin retaining clip that goes around the threads wher you pulled the axle out. then on top theres this little square piece of metal you have to pull out with a pair of needle nose then unscrew that nut with a screwdriver or whatever you can get in there, both mine came right off. and one drum came off. the other i had to work a little with a large screwdriver.

and to remove the bearing retainer nuts I need a special tool?

You can buy a big socket for the nuts, but I just use a hammer and chisel.

mine came right off they were hand tight. i even asked the machanic next door before i did this if they had the tool and he said every one hes ever done he was able to get off with basic hand tools

the socket is nice to have because the outer nut is suposed to be 40-70 ftlbs , not all have the keyway [the square metal bit] and they can have either 6 or 4 prong nuts. the inner nut is only hand tight at best but the outer one gets tourqed.

Get the socket on the "loan a tool" deal at Autozone. They will give you your $$ back when you return it.

And a little brake cleaner or rngine bright goes a long way in making it apparent how to get it apart.
