o, good call, I didn't notice you weren't talking about a II. Guess I should have searched. could be corse and 2-piece in 71. Look at the axle to see if it is 2-piece.

A '71 800 rear axle (front was NOT a D44 stock) *should* be a 1-piece axle, 30-spline as well (I think, not 100% on that).

Plus side: flanged, 30-spline
Down side: bastard axle. Slightly narrower than a SII unit, so shafts are harder to find, but anything can be made.

Now back to your regularly scheduled Pirate 4x4 :flipoff2:

Sell the D35 you have now, sell the Scout 800 rear axle D44, buy an 87 Jeep D44 axle. This way you won't have a bastard buildup. The better ticket is to get an old Ford with the 9 inch rear axle and hi pinion D44 front. I know everyone trying to get by on the cheap, ( never seems to work out that way) so take your time and find a good donner vehicle

An XJ D44 is $400 or less depending on how hard you look. Get that one. My buddy Led has one in the MJ we tubed and its held up great. The 71 800 has a 30-spline D44 but its short (width wise) ~ I guess you can put the wheel spacer/adapters on it to get the 5x4.5 pattern and still end up with the width your looking for.

yeah, i've decided to sell the Scout D44 if anyone here wants or knows someone who would want it. i've got the Chrystler 8.25 under the cherokar right now, and it does ok, just a c-clip job.
