: Difference between .223 and 5.56 ?

Only today, after looking at the DPMS website, did I find out that there might be a difference.

So, are there only two cartridges to confuse here?: The .223 Remington and the 5.56x45 NATO? I guess these aren't interchangeable?

If I get an M4gery, I don't want to screw up and get the wrong upper. I want whatever is most common.

Covered a bunch of times here on PBB.

There is a slight difference in the chamber. Google both rounds and SAAMI and you should be able to find the 'blueprints'

Short version:

You can fire 5.56 and .223 out a weapon chambered for the NATO cartridge, as pictured above.

If you order a weapon chambering the civvy .223, you shouldn't try to run any 5.56 through it. ;)

As many as is required to be fully tactical.

Screw sling points. If you don't have optics mounted to other optics, multiple lasers, and at least 4 lights... You're not tactical enough.

Got picatinny?

So would veiwing rear iron through two optics and finally the front iron sight still be referred to as co-witness or rather tri-witness?

5.56 is higher pressure as its loaded hotter. It'd be like shooting +P ammo out of a pistol thats not marked for it. It may not cause you troubles.... but theres a chance you may have it blow up in your face. Fun way to see the differance.... get a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO. Shoot some M855 or XM193 in the dark without a flash suppressor.... then shoot some wolf .223 or American Eagle .223. Not only will it have significantly less recoil, but it wont be as loud and there will be a much smaller fire ball (if any). In the case of AR's.... some dont like certain .223's as they dont have the UMPH to cycle the next round. My rifle was like that when I first built it, but after changing a few components.... it will swallow the crap with ease
