: which 4runner
pitter 05-30-2002, 09:48 PM ok i havent looked at them yet but one is a 88, has no rust on back fenders but the tailgate is shot, and has 4:56 gears and new 32's it is over 3 hours away and thats why i havent seen it, it needs a front crank seal and he is the second owner and has 275 ooo km;s
other is a 85, tailgate is shot, has rust 1 and a half inches up the rear fenders and has 300 000km's and he is the second owner, both tailgate windows need work and both are $ 5000 canadian
I am going to look at the 85 tomorow, but i think i would rather get the 88 because, getting rid of rust on the rear quarters is really hard, but if the frame is shot on either one then it is cut, and if i do a sas, i have the box for hy steer, and rear axle, i would have to swap in F250 shock towers into the 85 for flex, which would u guys build up for a dd, and weekend wheeler the plans are 35's, 440044 or yj's. chevies and lockers f/r and 5;29's all when i can afford it. let the flaming begin:D
4RunnerGuy 05-30-2002, 10:16 PM Buy the 88, that way you can give me the 4:56's when you re-gear.:flipoff2: Seriously, the 88 sounds better. It only has rust on the t-gate and you can easily and cheaply replace that. Other than that they both have alot of miles.
I say fawkem both.
They are both overpriced.
$42 max for the 88
find a cheaper 82-84 ext cab/85 4runner ($25-3500) thats in as good or better shape. Thats a savings of
Highsteer ,Ifs box, axle, Wagsx4,
and tonnes more, depending on you dealing skillzzzzzz
So get out and find one:smokin:
taloolarunner90 05-31-2002, 09:21 AM I'd say which ever one you get, try talking the guy down a lot more on the price, what have you got to lose? :emb:
dangerber 05-31-2002, 10:05 AM Getting rid of the rust on the rear wheelwells is easy with a little help from Mr. Sawzall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Bob Williams 05-31-2002, 11:19 AM I don't know what your budget is, but it sure seems like you could hold out a little longer for a better truck. Neither of them sounds that good IMO.
mwoodruff 05-31-2002, 01:56 PM If the 88 has the 3VZE (V6), get the 85. I don't like that motor. Flame on!:flipoff2:
morpheus 05-31-2002, 02:33 PM i wouldn't buy either one of them ... i'd watch the forsale boards here on POR. you can get a built wheeler for $5k ...

pitter 05-31-2002, 03:13 PM its $5ooo canadian which is like $3000 us and 270000 killometers is like 190 000 miles, both are 22re, and i was wondering if it is worth having more $$ into a rust free 4runner and then do a sas or have rust and have a solid axle, I would be able to get both for around $4400 canadian or 2600 us. and i h8 the v6's too:flipoff2:

I have waited over a year already, this is what they go for.

mwoodruff 05-31-2002, 09:23 PM Id rather fix a little rust than do a SAS. Guess it depends on how much rust we're talking about. If one is head and shoulders better condition, then Id go for it.
if i were you then i would spend the money and take a weekend trip into the city and buy from there, bigger market and cheaper trucks, i have seen like 90 onward models go for that in and around the lower mainland in BC, i would continue to shop around for something better, if the tailgates are shot then there is a high chance that in a year or so the rest of the truck will be shot, only cause it isnt showing doesnt mean it isnt there.

Look Harder.
44Runner 06-02-2002, 02:25 PM i would go with an 88. just because it already has the rear IFS axle, IFS box, and less mileage and no rust, which is clearly an issue for you. SASs are not that hard. The only thing you will need on the 88 is the actual axle, which aren't that pricey. While on the 85 ideally you need a new rear axle, IFS box and then all the other stuff you would need for the other truck too like new springs and crap. go 88. Just try to talk the dude down a bit in price
