Never paid attention, or had an issue with temps. My grille's about 80% blocked because of the winch, and I've yet to have a problem. *Shrug*

well, I don;t have a TJ but I have a 97 XJ 4.0 automatic that I have wrestled with heating issues since we bought it. It does fine on the road, but 4 low just makes it run super hot. I have a flowcooler water pump, GDI 3 row rad, 195 degree tstat and it still runs hot. My next two things to do are water wetter and an engine oil cooler with two 5" pusher fans. I think that the automatic is heating up because the torque converter never locks up when wheeling. This cause more heat to be dumped into the rad from the tranny cooler and tranny lines which run thru the rad.

You would think that jeep could make a cool running engine by now.

ours seems to run about 205 or so always has i was think about fixin it if it wasnt normal.seems a little high to me.Its an auto 4.0 as well.

My 99 XJ is auto and 4.0 and ive never had a heating problem stock cooling system, winch and bumper blocking the radiator, wheelin in 4 low all day in Moab in july 100+, running the AC?

The damn TJ seems hot all the time but maybe its not:confused:

My '97 gose up to 210 and stays right there at 210, no matter what, on highway or wheeling in the heat of summer. Am getting ready to change all hoses and flush system, so might put a 190 tstat in it ? :D

210-220 for me too. Ever since it was new. Never changes even in the winter.

I started to wonder if the gauge works.,,, But it does.
Hot is good for TJ's..

before you spend the dough on the other upgrades wire up a switch for the aux fan. This was the best thing I ever did to the XJ.

Some TJ's seem to run hotter than others - mine has run "warmer" than most folks since it was new (4.o/auto). The way around it is to build in additional cooling capability/reserve. Running a lower temp t-stat will only confuse the computer. I added a seperate tranny cooler (good for the tranny too) and a 3 core aftermarket metal radiator and now pretty much have the problem under control. I'll probably be adding an oil cooler simply because I play at JV and it can get quite warm there.

My 4.0 (in an XJ, 190t-stat)runs about 200-210 and runs a little cooler when I turn on the defroster or AC(cycles the aux fan on/off). Having the aux fan on while in 4-lo really keeps the engine running cooler, it probably helps having a manual tranny as well.

Rob, thanks. I am planning on putting this switch on with the 5" pusher fans on the same circuit. I have noticed that by the time my electric fan comes on, I am already dumping into the over flow bottle. If I keep the electric fan on whenever I am in 4Lo on hot days, this should help. Over heating issues are the worst. I can deal with just about any trail repair, but the mystery overheating is very frustrating. My cat might be clogged also, which would cause heat buildup.

Back when my wife had an XJ, it always seemed to run hot with A/C on, wheeling in 4-LO, steep climbs on freeway on hot days, etc. I finally bought an aluminum rad, HD fan clutch and a 190 t-stat and from then till the day we sold it it ran right at 200 no matter what.
My 92 YJ used to have a heat problem as well. Mostly running at 70+ mph up grades in the summer. New rad (not aluminum), HD fan clutch, water wetter, 190* t-stat, new water pump, nothing fixed it. Put a new fuel pump in it and it's running at 190 all day no matter what. Must have been running lean.

I always run 210. A couple of shops I have talked to say it is normal. My wife's XJ is the same.

AC what the fawk is that, That would meen that my top would be on, and that only happens when it is raining. I am not trying to cool down the whole world.

Once you start its all down hill from there. Mine used to only have 4" of lift and 33's, and then I broke an axle and that is where it all started. So now all you have to do is break on of the axles in her jeep and then the project can start.

Mine runs 210-215 with stock cooling and an 8274 blocking half the grill. It's an 01 4.0 5-speed.

My TJ has a 3-core rad, heavy duty fan-clutch, 180 thermostat and it runs a line to the oilfilter to cool the engine oil and it runs 180-190 on the trails and in stop and go traffic but as soon as I get on the freeway and go 65 it heats up to 200 no big deal though its designed to run 195 if it ain't broke and shooting steam everywhere don't fix it wiseman once said run what you got if it keeps breaking then switch it out

205 to 210 is the optimal for the TJ's. Thats what I have no matter what the conditions are.
