I'm lookinging at buying a camper for the back of my 99 longbed ctd, but I want to be able to pull my car trailer too. How big of a camper can I get away with, looking at 9 1/2' models, but the jack on the trailer looks pretty close. Don't think the extensions are too good of an idea???

Extensions aren't bad, but you'll probably need to upgrade your hitch and run weight distribution.

I've got a 10.5' camper on mine, I've got a 15k superhitch by torklift with a 24" extension and I air bagged it to help level the truck. I think it tows fine... But the biggest problem I've found is wind as I've only got a srw truck... I'm sure a drw would handle it better. Basically, don't plan on doing 75mph anymore

I have a swing up jack that can be clamped anywhere on the tongue.

Here is mine, 8.9' camper on a short box, I just moved the trailer jack from the nose cone to the front of the trailer deck, Lots of room now.

Last summer I ran a 8' popup truck camper in my 98 GMC k1500 short box. Obviously I had to leave the tailgate down to support the back of the 8' camper in my 6.5' box. Even doing this I was able to hook up and run my car trailer without any kind of extension. My trailer jack does flip so I was able to get it turned out of the way after I hooked up the trailer. I think I will be able to do the same thing with my new long box Dodge if I decide to get a longer camper - as long as it has a flat floor and no dropdown. Here is a pic of my old setup....

There appears to be a hint of red to that mud. Is it Gilbert mud? Doesn't the camper and the tongue weight put you a little close to the GAWR for the rear?

The easy way is to extend your trailer , bolt the camper to the front of the trailer , and call it a toy hauler.:D:D:D I am in the middle of doing that with a 28" g.n , and 12" small rv trailer.

It is indeed Gilbert mud. I was on my way home from the Crawl 4 The Cure last summer and stopped in between Gilbert and Cloquet for fuel.

The truck and empty camper weighed in at 6620 with a pretty even distribution between the front and rear so I think the axle was actually pretty good. Of course that was without the trailer - but I tried to do my best to keep the tongue weight down by moving the Jeep.

The truck actually did okay. I did have Airlift bags in the back with an on-board compressor and ran them at around 85 psi. The trailer has brakes on both axles so stopped wasn't too bad and the 350/at seemed okay but I did keep it around 60 in drive (no overdrive). I also ran load range D tires inflated to 65 psi. I averaged 11 mpg with this setup the 3 times I ran it.

I have the Air-ride air bags with in cab control in it, Keeps it level, but its not to bad even without them. Rancho 9000X Cranked to 9, I usually run the bags at 50 DS and 70 PS, it seems to get the best ride and keeps the trailer level. Now Gas mileage is another story!!!!!!!!!!!
