: Leaking slip yoke

What else can I do besides a SYE? I have replaced the rear seal on the tailhousing twice. I used RTV around the metal part of the seal the second time and also a speedy sleeve around the yoke to "grow" it a little. The leak seems to be coming from the yoke area and not the base of the seal. There is a small chip (about 1/4 inch) on the 3:00 side, end of the tail housing but it appears dry. Any ideas? Is there something inside the tailhousing that needs replaced also? I'm no mechanic but I like to get greasy  Thanks for any help.

I assume you are talking about a NP231 transfer case in a YJ wrangler. They have a tendancy to leak no matter what you do. As long as it is not leaking a ton of fluid and the level in the transfer case stays about the same. I wouldn't mess with it anymore. The only real cure for that case is a SYE. You could make sure the slip part of the driveshaft has no ridges or rust build up where it enters the transfercase. That could allow fluid to leak past.

yes, np231, wrangler. It leaks bad, 1 foot diameter stain overnight. It will leak until the case is dry, which is really odd considering the height of the output shaft compared to the low point in the case.

There are about 2000 reasons I dont need a atlas. Jeep is a (gasp) daily driver and kid shuttle. Not going to be doing any "hardcore" wheeling, just some ocassional hills and farm terraces chasing Bambis and Phesants. There is not a rock within 200 miles of here that you would not be immediatly arrested for driving on. The leak is just a PITA and it is too voluminous for a leak you have to live with to get to drive a Jeep. Next summer I am going to do a 3.5 bds and SYE along with some 33's and maybe a OX, so I don't get shamed by all the pickups running aroud, and thats as wild as I'll get. Thanks for any advice.
