What kind of suspension are you using??? if leafs then you really cant stretch it too much...I have added 6" to my frame like what H8 did and then I will be using waggy springs for now...in a year or so when I go coilover I will chop the frame extensions back off and push the axle back with the links...I will see if I can get photoshop working so I can post some pics of my prgress...:D

I would weld it also instead of just relying on the bolts. With the way you have it, the bolts will be taking a lot of shear stress and the ones at the crossmember will have quite a bit of leverage acting on them. I would also consider making your 2x3/8 backing plate an L bracket that would tie into the frame.

I have welded everything...all I did was take some 2x4 tubing cut it to length desired...since the frame is ~2.5" wide I used some 4"x1/4" strapping and cut it to the same length as the tubing then I sandwiched the tubing with two pieces of plate making it 2.5" wide now...then I welded it onto the frame ends...this is where I am at in the project...I am going to use a hole saw and cut a hole for a piece of pipe, then weld the pipe in for the bushings...this way it will be excatly like the stock rear most hanger (through the frame)...I wouldn't rely on bolts either Grade 8 or not:D:D:D

I used a piece of 2x2 x 1/4" square tube.
I cut the ends of the frame off, and inserted the tube into the fram as far as it would slide, then I welded it in place(I also used florret welds along both sides of the frame). I welded a piece of 1 1/2" schedule 80 pipe at the end of the 2x2 square tubing to be used for the shackle bushings. I then welded some 1/4" plate to the sides, and then ran a piece of 2" x 1/4" strap from the top of the frame all the way arpound the end, and then to the botoom of the frame. It may seem like overkill, but I wasnt sure how much I might be hitting the frame extensions with them poking out in the rear like they are. As it turns out, it is very seldom that the shackles or the frame ends ever make contact, but at least I dont have to worry about the frame extensions coming apart. I added about 8" of wheel base at the rear shackle. I also moved the forward leaf mounts rearwadr about 6 1/2" and down about 1". I use FJ40 millitary wrapped main springs, mixed with grand waggy springs. I also moved the rear body mounts inward of the frame. I strengthened the rear of the tub between the 2 rear mounts, by running a 2x2 x 3/16" L metal from side to side.
The rear bumper is welded solid between both frame rails and acts as the rear crossmember.
I did this to test the wheel base and make sure I would like the performance, I love how well it works, but the whole thing will be removed and swapped to a 4 link this winter, when I hand it over to Mike Shaffer for some major competion mods and to lighten it up.

Here what I am doing with mine:

I am using a 1/4 elip rear setup so I can just push it back using the links and springs. I can go as far back as I want to. However, I am now considering just chopping the entire rear portion of the frame and body off and doing a custom tube chassi rear that narrows at the back so that I can get more tire clearance.

Check out using XJ springs the pins are off centered.I know some people here have used them to stretch their wheel bases i think you would have to run them backwards to lengthen it.BrentOrton has flipped his rears on his xj to lengthen his wheel base like 5 inches.

I added a 5" piece of box tubing to the rear of mine and tonight I have finished one side and found out it actually stretched my wheelbase 8"...

Between this and moving the axles further apart, I added 25".

Don't fear the sawzall, it IS your friend.

Rocktaxi,

Your Jeep is kickass, but I don't want to get into custom body stuff.

Who's afraid of a sawzall? :flipoff2: :D

I just want to move that rear end back 8" or so.

Here is a shot of the rear of mine.
It has been moved ack about 8" and you can see where the rear body mounts have been removed and relocated inside the frame rails.
In the side shot you can get an idea of the overall wheelbase, which sits at slightly over 106" in its current set up.

What are you guys doing about the fuel tank. My YJ for example.. I couldn't push the rear back maybe 2-3" before hitting the tank. I would rather not take up cargo space since I occasional need the rear seat in it.

I am thinking of adding like 18-20" to the rear of my frame.(CJ5)Then moving the rear end and springs back so I end up with 106" wheelbase.Going to keep the tub stock and have a section for gas tank and cooler.I also need to keep a rear seat for my two boys.(7 and 10)Don't want to mess with the front right now cause I don't want to screw up the steering.Blazin:rasta:

The gas tank is no worries for me since I will be running a fuel cell...the only other option I could suggest is raise it like what H8 did and build over it...he can still have his back seat in his...

I'm thinking either a fuel cell, or one of those spun aluminum tanks like sandrails use. I haven't decided yet, either way though, the gas tank will be in the "cargo" area of the Jeep.

havent gotten to that point yet, but i was under the impression that if you went SOA, there were no clearance issues with the gas tank and rear axle....??

I am moving the axles out to 20" from the ends of the frame on my project Jeep.

I started with a YJ frame, cut the ends off and welded on 2x4" box tube straight back (so that the frame doesn't come back down after going over the axle). But I'll be using a 1/4 ellip setup in back and a (for now) transverse leaf spring in the front.

The stock YJ frame was 143" long. I made it exactly 144" long (12') which will give me a 104" wheelbase. I also narrowed the frame to the width of my CJ-7 (in front) which will give me more room if I decide to go coil over in front with my 62" wheelbase width.

I am moving the gas tank up about 4" total, and will be mounting the body up about 1.5" to 2.5" I'm going to be making a removable floor up an additional 2" - 3" for access to the gas tank. I will be mounting the rear seat (Got Kids?) on top of this, so it will be 2" or so higher than stock, which will also increase legroom.

Earlier in this trhead, someone was talking about XJ springs? I thought the spring of choice was the Waggy springs?
