Folding saw, hatchet, knife?

Something that will fit in a backpack or duffle and works decent.

Whats your favorite tool on a budget?

I carry one of these in the truck at all times. I've used it on ocassion and while I wouldn't call it well made it gets the job done. I had to sharpen it up when I got it, it had virtually no edge. Gerber makes a nice setup but it's going to cost you.

Ive used all 3, in my book its sorta debatable as to which gets used most but iffen I had to choose 1 Id say a hatchet if only cuz I dont use much that requires sawing, mostly splitting fallen stuff...

The doodad that Priest posted looks to be about the most versatile toy I've run into though...

My friend designed the Sawvivor http://www.dual-star.com/index2/Equipment/sawvivor_folding_pack_saw.htm
This saw is great, I have cut tons of wood with it camping.

That looks like it would work pimp. Something else that works well for backpacking is a cable saw. For splitting wood you almost need a hatchet though.

I carry my Take Down Buck Saw, it is an aluminum tube set up that when opened is a 24" Saw that will buzz through most wood like nobody's business, but if you only get one tool a Heavy Knife or an Axe would be your best bet.

I agree, a good shark toothed saw will do a better chop cutting wood to length. Cuts quicker, less energy, etc.
But an axe, machete, etc will provide more uses then just cutting wood.
Going to be hard to attack the zombies with a saw blade.

yeah, but if you have to amputate a gangrenous foot, I'd rather have the saw.

Do you have really good pain meds? And I don't mean  either.
It's going to be really hard to saw off your foot. But a swift wack with a heavy blade and you are done.

I have had one of these for years and it has served me very well so far. The blades are replaceable, and it stays behind the back seat of my jeep and is there when I need it...

I have a Sven Saw too. It works very well. It also folds up small and doesn't weigh much. That said I have never taken a saw backpacking...unless you count my leatherman.
