I am new to So Cal from AZ. What exactly is the green sticker, can you tell me more?
Po' riggity
05-20-2007, 08:50 PM
A green sticker is basically an off highway vehicle license. Depending on which DMV you go to, getting one for a buggy, or off road vehicle that USED to be an on highway rig, could prove to be difficult. I just got my green sticker/ohv license a few days ago. Not all of the local mountain trails are green sticker permitted, but some of them are. That being said, with a license plate that has a valid registration sticker on it, will most likely pass you by the rangers without them giving you a second glance.

Ok guys.. How does June 9th sound? I actually don't know the trails THAT well, but I figured we could start in cedar glen, then see where it takes us from there. I figure we can meet in the cedar glen post office parking lot at like 7am... For those of you that don't know where that is, here is the address:
28982 hook creek road, Cedar Glen, CA,92321
You can google map it. Let me know who's in for it!

Thanks for the info. So are their trails posted that require this? If I have a buggy that is not licensed, do I have to get some kind of plate here in CA? Sorry for all the questions, in AZ it was pretty easy.

The trails up here do have signs with vehicles on them that designate what types of vehicles can travel them.... I highly doubt the rangers would bother you if you had a CA DMV OHV sticker, on any of the trails up here. Basically, on your buggy, you would have to apply for a new title, and call the buggy a "sandrail" to get the OHV sticker. You then have to drag the buggy over to the local CHP office, and have them affix a "vin" to it. From there, you can get the new OHV title, with the new vin that the CHP affixed, and you will get a green sticker, which acts as a license plate for off highway vehicles. This sticker is good for 2 years. Cost on a 2 year sticker is $25. Any questions, PM me, or post here :) June 9th, its on. Cedar glen post office.. Be there. I will be in this:

I don't know about camping in the open just anywhere, but there are individual "yellow post" camp sites that are along the trails. Some have fire rings, some even have pit toilets, some have nothing. Don't have anything more specific. I've heard that they can be reserved though. Check with the rangers or maybe Big Bear Discovery Center for more info.

Don't have anything more specific. I've heard that they can be reserved though. Check with the rangers or maybe Big Bear Discovery Center for more info.
The Yellow Posts sites are first come first serve, no reservations. Info I lifted from http://www.bigbear.us/camping.html:
Yellow Post Sites
There eighteen Yellow Post Sites scattered around the Big Bear valley. They are located in remote areas, on back roads and trails, usually out of sight of other campers and vehicle traffic. Consequently, not all are accessible with the family sedan.
Most sites have picnic tables, fire rings and parking. Campfires are allowed all year as long as the fire remains within the fire ring. There are no water or toilet facilities. There is no fee to camp in Yellow Post Sites, but each vehicle must have an Adventure Pass. All of these sites are on a strictly "First Come, First Served" basis. To occupy a space, you need to register at the Big Bear Discovery Center on the day you plan to camp, and pick up a California Campfire Permit, which is free. Bring your own firewood.
Permit Needed:
* Registration with Discovery Center
* California Fire Permit
* Adventure Pass (for any vehicle parked in the forest)
Fires: Campfires are allowed all year as long as the fire stays within the designated fire rings.

Yup, Donald is right.. its about a 5 minute drive. I wouldn't stress about it TOO much if your rigs aren't street legal. I plan on driving mine to the post office from my house (about 6 miles) then from the post office to the trail head, and back home again when we are done... And Im green stickered. I have an extra vehicle here so I will take the license plate off of it just to be on the "safe" side, and attach it to the jeep.. Should keep the cops from looking too much.

Yup, just up Hook Creek around one turn from Jensens. I believe it is called the Chef's Inn now. There is a pretty large parking lot and there should be plenty of room for a truck/trailer at that time in the morning.

Ran down dishpan today on a motorcycle. First I've seen of it since breaking my collarbone 15 years ago there on my mountain bike :mad3:
There was a full size Bronco stuck on the last rock garden at the top. No other rigs around and the guy and his girl were walking to the top to get help. Might still be there next weekend :shaking:
Anyway, I'm a newbie at this and was thinking about going. I have a Sami with 5" shackle reverse (calmini special), 31" with backspace, 5.14 Tcase gears, and a fire breathing romp-stompin 1.3 liter 60hp monster under the hood :mr-t:
Is this run doable without lockers? Looks like it might be hard to get traction with all the dirty rock. Ran Calico at HDR, but just went downhill mostly, so not sure how my rig climbs with open diffs.
Will be getting a spool for the rear and probably an autolocker for the front soon, but not for a few more weeks.
Thanks for any info.

If we are going to try to get 3-trails in then we should all pack a lunch. It isnt hot like dth but it does get warm up here during the day so bring enough water/drinks also. I personally don't usually drink on the trail, but I'm not a nazi about it as long as you can keep yourself under control. Any stupid drunkenness and I don't know you anymore.

Hey all, this is Melanie. Scott, I will try and cancel my prior commiments. I have already paid for the event, but I will see if I can reschedule if you guys will go to breakfast. If I can find a place open at 6:30 then who's game? I will call the cottage and a few other locations within blue jay/ rim forest or arrowhead. That includes Shaun, Lisa, Scott your wife and anyone else in the area. :spam:

You only really need the adventure pass if you leave the rig parked and unattended. If you're WITH it, such as stopped for eating lunch or to BS, you're OK. We've been stopped for lunch many times without the passes and the rangers don't say anything about it (including at T6 just a few weeks ago), even though they'll stop to BS about the rigs or hassle us about parking too far off the trail. I usually keep a pass on the tow rig for when I leave it parked at a staging area but the trail rig doesn't really need it.
Have fun guys, maybe I'll run into you up there.

So is the wardon going?
BBQ is on. Donald and I are going to supply the carne asada and CHicken asada (due to somone not eating real meat), salsa, cheese, beans, rice and house. BYOB or you will be thirsty, we might just donate water if you look like your going to pass out, but it will be tap. Lucky we live in the mountains, at least the water is clear.:spam:
Yes she is! I can't wait to drive up the mountain at 7am....she is going to freeze her ass off!!! I will tell her about the BBQ at your place.

I have the pics of you at the beginning of Holcomb. From the rear and side, but none from the front. I will give Shaun a disc for you. Then we can meet for dinner so he can not give it to you! :D Actually, I could just stop by now that I know where you live. hahahaha.....
I learned my lesson last time. This time I have his sunglasses to hold hostage. I'm not handing them over till I get my disk.:flipoff2:

Man that looks like a great trip. New to CA and looking forward to getting out and checking these out. I will watch for the next trip and hope to meet some of you. I just picked up a rig that is not licensed or street legal. Do you guys usually drive to these trails or does anyone trailer to off road spots?

Technically all the trails in Big Bear are for registered, street legal rigs only. As Scott was saying, his is green sticker (off hwy only) but still looks like a regular jeep so he probably wouldn't have been hastled. I don't know that you would be able to get away with a full buggy or not.
A few people trailered their rigs up there. The problem with that is that there are few places to park a truck/trailer for the day, and in our case, we didn't finish the trail very close to where we started. It would have been possible to take dirt roads back, but it was easier for most to just take the hwy back to where the trailers were left. This wouldn't be as much of a problem if we had started and finished in Big Bear which is very do-able.

You're welcome. We enjoyed meeting/wheeling with you also. My stepson and I sometimes get bored and go run stuff by ourselves. Hit me up if you get the itch to go run something real fast sometime.

We ran into several groups of Broncos plus some other groups. Everyone was very polite and patient. I was actually a little surprised, I was out on Memorial Weekend and this trip way WAY busier.
Hope to see you next time Dusty.

BTW, what happened to the discussion of running Lisa's 4runner through dishpan at 40 mph? I guess her running boards are all still in tact huh?

Cleghorn would be doable, but I run into the problem of towing my junk out there, running the trail, then trying to get my junk back to where my trailer is LOL...

if you're mostly worried about that, you can access cleghorn from the siliverwood side. instead of comming in off of the 15, you come off the 138 near the railroad tracks area just before 138 gets twisty again and head south on the dirt. that road meets the part that starts from the 15 where the real part of the hard sections of the trail start.
then all you have to do after you finish the trail is loop from the last turn out by the lake, down 138. what's that 4-5 miles?? or park your trailer there in the morning and drive that first.
