: Memorial Day CA HANDOUT
Kurtuleas 05-18-2007, 01:56 PM Created by Rick AKA WLDWUN from my club.
THE ROUTE DESIGNATION PROGRAM WILL HAPPEN IN EVERY NATIONAL FOREST IN THE UNITED STATES.
WHILE THIS FLYER IS FOR ELDO, THIS WILL PERTAIN TO YOU SOON. PLEASE READ ENTIRE THREAD AND EDUCATE YOURSELF ON THE ROUTE DES PROCESS
WE STAND TO LOSE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MILES OF ROADS AND CAMPSITES UNLESS YOU PERSONALLY DO YOUR PART.
If you are camping or wheeling ANYWHERE in the ELDO National Forest (That includes the 'CON) PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE. Trust me, it will be well worth the effort.
Thanks in advance for your support
EDIT: AN UPDATED FLYER WITH BETTER WORDING AND NO TYPOS IS AVAILABLE. PM ME WITH YOUR E-MAIL TO HAVE ME FORWARD IT TO YOU.
Over 1000 miles of roads in this forest are being closed to vehicles!!
Most people are unaware of what is happening within the Eldorado National Forest.
Under the Route Designation Program the forest service is proposing to close over 1000 miles of mostly dirt roads to any motorized vehicle traffic, this includes street legal vehicles as well as motorcycles, and ATVs. If you have ever driven off of the pavement in this forest, most likely one of the roads you have been on is going to be closed. There are approximately 3200 miles of forest system roads, after the decision is signed there could be at best 2214 miles and possibly as low as 1376 miles, that is over 50% of roads in the forest that could be closed! This is something that is not way down the road, it is happening now. The decision will be released to the public in June, we then have only 45 days to make comments on it and our comment can make a difference. Changes have already been made due to input for groups, organizations and even individuals so everyone needs to voice there concerns.
So what can you do?
First, get as informed on what is happening as you can. Go to the Eldorado National Forest website and look at “Route Designation Project”
http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldorado/projects/route/index.shtml
if you look under PRELIMINARY ALTERNATIVES it will show you 5 alternatives, alternative A,B,C,D and E. keep in mind alternative A is not an option, so there are really only 4 choices.
Second, send an email to eldoradoroutes@fs.fed.us and ask to be put on their email list and they will advise you of upcoming phone meetings and town meetings that will have information on what is going on.
Third, when the EIS draft is released you MUST make comments on specific roads that you feel should remain open and why. There will only be a 45 day comment period, after that there is nothing you can do.
Forth, get as many people involved as you can, don’t sit back and let this happen without a fight.
Camping in this forest is suppose to be a fun and exciting time for everyone, but without the roads that get you to those campsites, or places you just like to ride, the fun will be gone. Let’s do something and keep the roads and trails open that have been here for decades.
If you have no interest in this information please pass it on to someone who may be.
Please do not litter.
I am going to forward this to as many club forums as I can.....but I could use some help....here is a list of forums ;

Kurtuleas 05-18-2007, 03:48 PM Thanks BEBE,
I am sending out the flyer on the E-mail chain, but I know you have more e-mail addresses of all the FOTR crowd. Can you e-mail it out too?
I have also PM'ed a few key people here on pirate that tend to know a lot of people.....
Passing on this message online is imperitive, but we must make sure that people actually PASS OUT THE FLYER...
Kurtuleas 05-18-2007, 04:22 PM The link in the flyer is bad if it is printed out.
It SHOULD read:
r5/eldorado/projects/route/
I will fix it as soon as I post this, you may have to forward the link/flyer again..
edit: cannot be fixed, pirate puts it in the form of a link and cuts it down...
Sno White 05-18-2007, 06:59 PM Great!
It looks good. Well worded and doesn't come off as some group of yahoos.
The only thing I could see adding is some of the favorites such as:
Pack it in Pack it out!
and
Tread Lightly!
Rick
forbergler 05-19-2007, 08:50 AM Also, no offense intended to anyone, but run spell check and proof-read before printing up:D
forbergler 05-19-2007, 08:59 AM So far 70 views on the Toy P/U forum. Woo hoo. Pathetic. I hope it gets some more attention soon.
I live in Ione, and the south western part of Eldo is onlyt about 40 minutes up the road. I'm going to try to hit PiPi Valley this week and staple some up on the kiosks. Elkins Flat would be a good area too.
Kurtuleas 05-19-2007, 10:12 AM TWO requests for the flyer via e-mail....
TWO! :shaking:
Come on people. This is going to happen in every National Forest.
PM me with your e-mail addy if you want the word version.
forbergler 05-19-2007, 11:43 AM hopefully people are copy and pasting off the board.:)
forbergler 05-19-2007, 11:51 AM This analysis is designed to provide decision-makers with critical information needed to manage a minimum road system that is safe and responsive to public needs and desires, is affordable and efficiently managed, has minimal negative ecological effects on the land, and is in balance with available funding for needed management actions.
This is an excerpt of the Lassen NF's RAP(road analysis program- every forest has a different term). Note the language that is used throughout these documents. Pretty cryptic if you ask me, and pretty obvious what their goal is: to close as much of the forests to motorized use as possible!!!!
They can justify the closures financially and enviromentally, so the only chance we have is if our voices ring LOUD!

Copy and paste into Word. You may have to format it a little to make it more presentable.

LOL, I am a fawkin HS teacher, and I did not even catch that...
but hey, WLDWUN wrote it not me! :flipoff2:
Seriously though...thank you, I did not even see it...
forbergler 05-19-2007, 02:57 PM I've had two requests also for the flyer from the Toy forum. And the number of views keeps growing-120+ at the moment.
I currently have a migrane from going over the RDP's for Lassen, Plumas and Tahoe N.F.'s One closure that got my attention was the 4wd route along the south side of Gold Lake, which is NE of Downieville. This is a fun trail, especially in the Spring, and it looks like they are gonna close it, as well as some portions of trails in that area on the TNF side.
rtrsam 05-20-2007, 09:38 AM Not to be a butthole, but there are a couple of spelling, grammar and punctuation errors in that flyer. In the interest of putting your absolute best foot forward, you might consider these revisions:

In spreading the word, keep in mind this affects not just the four wheel community, but also hikers, hunters, fishermen, backpackers, wood cutters, anyone who wishes to use their public lands. No, I ain't a freaking english teacher.
banthis 05-20-2007, 11:33 AM Back in Dec? it was ABCDE and 45 days; we'll get in touch via email.
This thing hasn't moved since then?
Kurtuleas 05-20-2007, 06:38 PM Nope...they kept putting it off, putting it off. And in the meantime Scardina, the guy in charge of the whole fawkin project got replaced...
landusepbb 05-20-2007, 06:45 PM And this is news? This is currently happening in virtually EVERY NF nationwide. If you don't know this you haven't been listening. :p
I set up a more generic one for some other forums: I also added a little drama:p
Will your favorite Camping spot or OHV trail still be here when you come back????
The Route Designation process will CLOSE thousands of miles of trails from your National Forests and BLM Land.
Most people are unaware of what is happening within the <<insert your forests name here>>, under the Route Designation Program, the forest service is proposing to close THOUSANDS of miles of mostly dirt roads to ANY motorized vehicle.
THIS WILL EFFECT, 4 WHEEL DRIVE ENTHUSIASTS, OHV RIDERS, CAMPERS, EQUESTRIANS, HUNTERS AND FISHERMAN!!
The final drafts will be released to the public this summer and finalized by the end of this year, once this happens you have only 45 days ask for your favorite trails to be left open.
So what can you do? GET informed GET involved GET heard!!!.
Go to the <<insert your forests name here>>and find your favorite forest(s). Locate that forests Route Designation Page. (they are sometimes difficult to find, but they are there)
<<insert your forests route designation weblink here>>
Review the PRELIMINARY ALTERNATIVES maps. Find your favorite camping areas and trails. Are they scheduled to be closed ???
If they are, get on the MAILING LIST, get involved in the public meetings and the conference calls, and when the final decision is made you will be notified.
You will only have ONE opportunity to address your trails, and to tell the <<insert your forests name here>>why you want it left open.
THEN get as many people involved as you can, don’t sit back and let this happen unknowingly.
Learn and practice responsible resource use, treading lightly, packing it in and packing it out.
HELP KEEP OUR PUBLIC LANDS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

where do you find info on what is proposed to happen in a specific county?

It's not news for us brother....
But the majority of people out there have no clue, thats why we need this flyer to go out to EVERYONE camping in ELDO this coming weekend.
You should know that better than anyone.
where do you find info on what is proposed to happen in a specific county?
You can start here http://www.fs.fed.us/
Find the forest that has your favorite trails. Find the Route Designation Page.
Someone dare me to post this in general chit chat :D c'mon....dare me:flipoff2:

I was being sarcastic. I do believe no matter what we do at this point it is too little, too late (in most cases). But, at least there are a few not giving up.

It's NOT to late in Eldo. Rick and I have already had routes and campsites ADDED to some of the alternative maps.
When the Final Draft, the map they pick comes out, we have a 45 day window to argue for routes and campsites to be open. if you do not argue, you have nothing to stand on. If you argue your point well enough, you CAN keep stuff open.
You also have to remember that we are not just fighting for roads to be kept open, but many fire trails and other dirt roads will be closed to green stickered vehicles....
YOU CAN STILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE
WLDWUN 05-21-2007, 11:55 AM I just sent it into the Placerville paper to see if they would publish it in the letters to the editor, they did it last year when we were trying to get a field trip together with Tony Scardina. I have also sent my version to Tony Scardina and Amy Reid with ENF to get there imput on it (not looking for there permission). I have redone it a little due to imput from others and I DID use spell check, but spell check on my computer must have got to the school KURTULEAS teaches at :p
I have corrected any errors that have been brought to my attention and plan to have it printed for our trip this weekend
Kurtuleas 05-21-2007, 11:58 AM Do you want to see what we are dealing with? Here are the before and afters. The proof is in the pudding folks.
These two pics are from the route des maps. The map is of Silverfork road, kinda by Iron Mountain road.
The first one is a map of all the current roads, it is the inventory.
The second is PlanD, the map of the roads that will remain open after route des, if this plan is picked. :mad3: :shaking:

http://www.kurtuleas.com/pland.jpg
WLDWUN 05-21-2007, 12:49 PM also keep in mind all of the roads on the map that are black dashed lines are going to be dirt roads that will be street legal only, that is you will not be able to ride any OHV vehicle on them even though they are dirt
Sluice Sally 05-21-2007, 02:51 PM We'll get some out this weekend on the Con:)
WLDWUN 05-21-2007, 05:48 PM I just got off the phone with Tony Scardina of the Route designation Project. he is reading over the flyer I emailed to him this morning. I did tell him I am looking for his input to make sure I am not mistating anything, and that I am not looking for him to word it or give me his permission. he did say he would like to see a few words changed and will email me his comments tuesday morning. I will post the final draft I have tomorrow
forbergler 05-21-2007, 06:43 PM I posted up over 100 this afternoon from PiPi up to Caples, at every message board I came across. I just stapled up ten or so at eac location, so hopefully people can take one home. I also stuck some on a few windshields. There was a group of Subaru's that were parked at a trail head, and I told them all about it! Not:flipoff2:

Or you can E-mail him, You should have his e-mail, Rick is the guy with the sno-cat up by your place.....
RickyRetardo 05-22-2007, 10:56 AM When the new flyer comes out, can I get an electronic version? there are some other forums that I can post these on and make as a sticky.
thanks
Kurtuleas 05-22-2007, 11:12 AM If you PM me your e-mail address, I can E-mail it to you as an attachment.
It may not be the final-final version, but it is still pretty good...
From what I heard, the forest service, ie. Tony Scardina, just asked for a few wording changes. Like changing "fight" to a different word.
Not that we really care about what they want, we were not asking for their permission, but Rick wanted to check to see if something written was not correct.
WLDWUN 05-22-2007, 12:09 PM anyone that wants a word document of the flyer I have send me an email to Rferdon@valin.com and I will send it to you in the morning. I have not heard back from Tony Scardina today but expect to sometime today. I will be out for the rest of today ( I do work every now and then)
cougarfreak 05-22-2007, 12:41 PM I've spread the flier out to my local club's site Trailbusters4x4, IH8MUD, TLCA, Toyota4Runners.com, TTORA, YotaTech, UltimateYota.com, and Marlin's site Forum. Thanks for caring!!!!:grinpimp:

I didn't think to look on that part of the map......
I have not camped or even gone in that area or by Wright's lake in a few years.
We REALLY gotta play that one up. That may be deserving in a thread all it's own either here or under the Rubicon thread....

I'll try to think of more places to post it. What about ATV sites/motorcross forums?

WLDWUN 05-23-2007, 11:30 AM I got a responce back from Tony Scardina at the ENF route designation team in regards to my flyer. Christ he made more revisions to it than my sixth grade english teacher would have. I have used some of his revisions so as to keep it correct and not misleading but still right to the point that roads are going to be closed (he seems to insist on routes) and this is how I will have it printed for this weekend. anyone want it, drop me your email and I will send you the word document

WLDWUN 05-24-2007, 11:50 AM everybody pleae keep in mind that the forest service will not stand for posting of these flyers just anywhere within the forest, there are some message boards that would allow this but not stapled to a sign post or tree. and since I was (the fool) who started the origional copy of this it may come back at me....and they know where I live!....Oh well, like this will be my first run in with them.:D
Please make sure you have permission to actually post a flyer. I am going to be handing them out to individuals while we are camping.
rcurrier44 05-24-2007, 04:02 PM Ours has already happened in the GNF....
Full size 4wd didn't loose much this time...because they already took everything away. But ATV, Motorcycle and Snowmobile lost 40%-60% each!!!

What happens when people take one and then toss the flyer out the window onto the trail?
Forest Service is going to have a fit if they even find one.
RanchoRedneck 05-24-2007, 06:04 PM i drove up to silver fork the other nite to check out spots to camp and ride. almost every spot we use to camp is closed, stupid red markers are every were up there. im going to take as many copys of the flyer as i can up there and hand them out and stick them up on the boreds at all the camping places alone the way to the spot that i found. what happened to the days where you could just go camp and not have to worry about what road is closed or not. i dont know about everyone elce here but when i camp i like to have my own space not around anyone, thats why i dont go to the forest. :shaking::shaking:

For one, the Forest Service KNOWS that we are passing them out. We even sent a copy to the Forest Supervisor, not looking for permission, but making sure we did not post anything incorrect.
Right now, unfortuantley, there are about 6 versions of this flyer going around. Several of the versions have "Do not litter" and "If you are not interested in this information, please pass it on to someone who will be" on the bottom.

I will be camping with my family on Silverfork this coming weekend. If you are up there, look for a white YJ with a "Kyburz Krawlerz" sticker, and a Clamper driving it, passing out flyers....that would be me.
I have been camping up there for maybe 15 years, and it REALLY took a turn for the worse about 1 year ago.

Been there, done that, handing flyers out at a get together and ended up spending my next weekend picking them up.
Kurtuleas 05-24-2007, 09:31 PM Either way....
I gotta do what I can brother. Fawkin very few people are helping me....
I am willing to spend hours picking up tossed flyers if that means even a FEW roads and campsites are kept open.
It never seem to be a problem on the 'Con during the Jeep Jambo, they give you like 20 flyers from all the sponsers....

I gotta do what I can brother. Fawkin very few people are helping me....
I am willing to spend hours picking up tossed flyers if that means even a FEW roads and campsites are kept open.

TrailLegacy 05-26-2007, 08:43 AM I was being sarcastic. I do believe no matter what we do at this point it is too little, too late (in most cases). But, at least there are a few not giving up.
Agreed.
Our only chance to talk to these people with our so-called national 'leaders' in the same room to supposedly back us all up...was anything but 'united' and certainly a historic farce.
I keep going back to what John Stewart had to say about what sadly happened here in Michigan in regards to the route process or even Denis4x4's excellent and very telling post on this forum earlier:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=560602
"....Quite frankly, the lack of leadership on a national basis representing ALL aspects of the ORV experience is frustrating. Unless and until there is a single national organization representing ALL orv owners and those same owners take responsibility to fund and support a national organization, we're going to see a constant erosion of our rights to access public lands for motorized recreational use...."
A glaring lack of proper nationally-led leadership was the #1 reason that this off-road community stumbled without direction into this massive closure mess...and absolutely nothing but a giant non-profit focused housecleaning complete with an influx of highly paid professionals (working under the same roof) will ever afford us a chance in heck of ever getting the majority of this public land back.
"Too little, too late" indeed and (unquestionably) a poorly led fight that discouraged many good people from ever getting involved again as a result of the treatment they received when called to the community meeting table.
Kurtuleas 05-28-2007, 11:01 AM I passed out about 60 flyers to differnet campsites and cars on Silverfork road and Iron Mountain. I even gave one to the ranger that was working the road...
About 90% of the people I passed them out to were pissed.
I used the flyer posted here, just a little reworded, with pictures of Plans A and D on the back...the small sample that I posted here.
The maps are a key selling point, when you see "A" with all the roads and "D" with nothing left....

I drove down Silverfork and passed a bunch out...where were you guys camped at?
RanchoRedneck 05-29-2007, 02:15 PM right befor the bridge after 4mp, on the left hand side up a little dirt trail. its a nice spot we camp there every year
Kurtuleas 05-31-2007, 11:26 AM I will have an updated Route Des flyer for every national forest in about a week. I think it is important that week create a blanket flyer that could be used anywhere, not just in Eldo.
It will include maps of a section of forest with a possible before and after going thru route des.
It will explain why route des is happening, where people can get more info and what they must do to save roads and campsites.
Please keep checking back here in land-use for the update...
