I know this has probably been discussed but i recently read in jp magazine that to flat tow with the 231 you do not need to disconnect the driveshaft you just put the t-case in neutral and the transmission in 1st. Is this true? Oh and this is for a 88 wrangler with the 5 speed and no sye installed so if you think i should take out the driveshaft, do i nee to worry about fluid leakign out. thanks

transfer case in neutral and transmission in neutral make sure teh ignition is on so the wheel can turn. Dont need to disconnect the driveshaft.

As long as you still have the disconnect front axle you can do it that way. The front drive shaft is going to turn with the rear when the transfer case is in neutral. The ignition switch needs to be in the unlock position so the front tires can follow the tow vehicle.

When flat towing, the bigger the tow rig, the better. I tried to use a Grand Cherokee to flat tow a CJ-7. I'll never do that again. Motorhomes make great tow rigs for flat towing.

What happened what you used a Grand Cherokee?

When you make a 90% turn, the Grand would be in turn, the CJ would start turn slower. Then the Grand would have completed turn and be going straight but the CJ would be slow to correct its wheels. When CJ did make correction, it did so with a wicked whip on the rear of the Grand Cherokee. If you were at higher speed, this would kill you. Example, a car cut you off on x-way forcing you to make a quick lane change. After using the Grand to flat tow, I purchased a trailer. I'll never flat tow again. :shaking:

Actually, incorrect.

Transfer case in neutral, Transmission in Gear.

The transfer case has an oil pump that is driven by the rear driveshaft so it will be properly oiled. However the drag of the transfer case could possibly cause things in the transmission to spin, which would not be properly oiled due to a lack of an oil pump.

Don't believe me do a search on flat towing a YJ, you'll find that the recommended method is transfer case in neutral, transmission in gear. This goes for the NP207, NP208, NP228, NP229, NP231, NV241, and NV242 transfer case.
