: D300 lube question....

I know this sounds dumb but what type of lube does the D300 take?

I always thought they took 80-90 but while cleaning up the one I picked up from the junk yard I notice it seemed to be full of ATF...or at least some other thin red oil.

It's from a '83 or '84 CJ, did they switch somewhere in there or am I way off base on this?

80-90

hmmmm....this is no good.

I hope having been filled with ATF has not allowed it to chew itself up to bad inside. <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

Here is a simple rule of thumb:

Chain Drive t'case: ATF
Gear Drive t'case: 80w90
Atlas: Expensive Torco MTF

Are you sure it is ATF <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0"> <IMG SRC="smilies/question.gif" border="0">
Some joker may have gotten a hold of some Rockwell CD50 oil. CD50 is a synthetic, 50 weight gear oil. It is red in colour, and thinner than normal gear oil.

it was atf... dont worry about it.. some people who live up north.. or think their d300 is shifts to hard.. will put atf in it instead of gear lube.. infact i think they did change over from the factory.. atleast on what they recommmend...
but yes.. if its got gears.. run with the gear lube..

I think it is fine, all the gears looked OK.

I thought it might have been a synthetic gear oil but it was really thin. I figured it would be OK when I looked at it but I just wanted to make sure I put the correct stuff in it.
