Not possible (going up) without winching. Coming down is another story. Hell, I'd do it in a Civic if somebody would loan it to me!

A TJ wheelbase is longer than a Sammy and I don't see an 89" WB (is that right?) making it up the waterfall. I'd like to see video or pics if it did happen because that would be impressive.

Who's Sammy was it anyway?

Stock sammy is 79". I believe a stock wb sammy could make it, but my opinion is kinda biased. :D

 I would pay to see 33s as well. Would be a GREAT show. I did it on 35's and that was a HUGE amount of wasted tread and time. 30-40 mins of 3rd gear rev limited launches. Poor rig... :D

how much money you got? scrapped the last rig before i could give backdoor a try when i was on 33s. once the next rig has a cage, i will make an assault on backdoor.

If you had to winch up that spot, then I know it's Sledge. Not very many 35" tired rigs can hit that line perfectly enough to make it without winching.

Rick.

The why is because a large contingent of folks view the desert and their presence there as an escape from societal standards and codes of conduct.

If no one is around to police them, then they do what they please regardless of the rules posted or that exist for recreation in the OHV. If you read the rules on the sign pertaining to firearms, you will notice that the exact slug or bullet firing firearms that did some of the damage to the sign are specifically prohibited in the OHV.

For the same reason you rarely see a clean public restroom, someone else will clean up after them, so they don't care. They treat the desert in the same manner.

Put more bluntly, they are assholes that could care not a whit less about the desert. To them, it's just a place away from the city to blow off steam, tear stuff up, and dump their trash of many forms.

We are the many that think like this. Unfortunately , it is the few that stand out in the crowd.

It's more than a few Steve, when it comes to JV. There's not but a couple of fire pits including ours that aren't full of nails. I see them all over the lakebed. If it were only a few, then there would only be a few fire pits with nails and staples from burning pallets.

I've personally come across 8 different instances of black water tank dumping on our way out on the side roads.

There's been a considerable amount of target practice on top of the overlook down into Backdoor with many spent brass casings littering the area that we picked up and disposed of.

We've yet to pull into the camp we normally try to use without having to do major clean-up ranging from picking up about a 100 spent 12 gauge hulls and 100's of clay target pieces to cleaning burnt trash out of the pit to spending about an hour with a scrub brush and water cleaning hundreds of paint ball splatters off the big rocks.

We quit camping by the first sand wash because there was too much trash to clean up each time.

http://www.justaddrocks.com/images/images_stuff/DSC0101.jpg

That became the norm instead of the exception.

So, if it's only a few doing it, they sure are a bunch of busy little shits.

Hammer Hog

It's more than a few...

...Fire pits...full of nails...all over the lakebed...

...Cleaning burnt trash...

...Black water tank dumping...

So, if it's only a few doing it, they sure are a bunch of busy little shits.

Unfortunately, I agree 110%

I hate to say it, but no matter the event, whether it be a Bender (Clean-up) Jambo to a Victor Valley event, etc. ...crap still gets deliberately left behind. Being that some of us live just around the corner, we're usually the last ones to leave and unfortunately we see what's left after most are gone. :shaking:

I've gotta say the biggest disappointment was a couple of years ago after the Bender CLEAN-UP Jambo was over. I as well as a few friends from our club provided a huge dumpster for clean-up recycles/clean-up trash. And after all had left, we attempted to haul off the container and such to find that a large percentage was camp trash, not clean-up trash. There was countless bags of camp trash that was piled so high that a good amount was stacked around the container. It was a total abuse of what the containers were there for...CLEAN-UP RECYCLES/CLEAN-UP TRASH, NOT CAMP TRASH!!! There was enough camp trash left on the ground (Not all bagged either.), it could have literally filled another roll-off. So you can only imagine what we were faced with. :mad3:

Even after this last Bender Jambo/Clean-up, we stayed late and wheeled after most had left. We came across so much new trash strewn all over Lower Big Johnson to about the tune of what was found at Back-Door. And we can't say it was the quad & dirt-bike folks, it was the rock-crawler types.

So with this said, we need to more than ever self-police, especially if we want to play in our ever so threatened Johnson Valley.

PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT!!!

BTW, I in no means have ever put the blame of any of that camp trash towards the Benders of that said clean-up event, let alone ever complained to them about it. It's towards all the lazy-ass individuals that had abused the situation.
We will still step up and help in the future of any future clean-up event. But please take your own trash home with you!!!

OlMan
06-29-2008, 04:42 PM
You know this trash crap in the desert is really disgusting. I moved to Apple Valley a couple of years ago when we retired. One of the things we enjoy is geocaching. We learned a lot about our area doing this. I never knew about Juniper Flats and have just started to explore. Neat area. But everywhere we went, people left just everything. PIGS.

This morning I drove out to meet some friends to do Shredder Canyon out by Lake Los Angeles. Trash all along the ride. Everything that fits in a pickup and dumped along the road. Did not even drive off the road. Just dumped it next to the road. What low lifes! Then the trash in and around Shredder. Again, amazing.

I picked up a nail in my rig somewhere along the line at the Bender event. Use magnets in camp, but still can't keep up with it.

I think a lot of us are conerned about losing JV and a way of life. I think a lot of the people who use JV have no idea what a neat place they have and really don't care about anything but themselves.

See ya all at the FOJV on Tuesday.

Everything that fits in a pickup and dumped along the road. Did not even drive off the road. Just dumped it next to the road.
What I read from that is most of the dumpers are locals and non-4x4 folks... we see that on trails everywhere, that the illegal dumping tapers off rapidly when clearance challenges escalate. There are a few idiots on our side, as well, but the general populace is the biggest problem... law enforcement works well, regardless -- but we need to keep them focused on our needs, or other squeaky wheels will distract them.

I think a lot of us are conerned about losing JV and a way of life. I think a lot of the people who use JV have no idea what a neat place they have and really don't care about anything but themselves
Amen! I'm too many gas tanks away to visit JV often, but I just got back from Sierra, and I expect that the Hammers are as big a deal to you, as the Rubicon is to me... we all have special places, and we need to work together to keep them safe.

Thanks for everyone's efforts locally to help understand the issues and ultimately protect the Hammers... you have much support and appreciation from afar. When you're ready, that'll make a pretty good war-chest...

i didn't see any trash on any of the trails when i went.
unfortunately, there was some graffiti in big white lettering on some rocks up high on a hill. really made the scenery look like garbage.

anyone know what the deal is with the wires on the ground when you get near the marine base? they are everywhere.
