: Coil Spring comments from the peanut gallery
NC Zuk 06-01-2002, 08:37 AM Although I have only recently registered as a member to Pirate4X4, I have been reading the thoughts and opinions of all of you for quite a while and realize that there is alot of knowledge in here, so..........
I really want to purchase a coil over suspension from RRO, but i know noone who acually owns one. I want to know if it is worth the effort. It's funny, I have spoken to quite a few different vendors and have heard good and bad things about it, now i'm really confused. Now I want to hear from those who actually have it. My other option is to go with a YJ setup from Trail Tough. A friend of mine has this and I love it. Well now its your turn, COIL or YJ, and why. Yea, i'm a newbie, but so were you at one point!
squirrelman83 06-01-2002, 09:03 AM Well, if you want a suspension anytime soon, I'd recommend the Trail Tough YJ kit. I've heard that the coil conversions, both from Rocky Road and Shaffer directly, can take a very long time to get.
I have the Trail Tough YJ kit on mine and love it! It rides great, flexes better, and is really easy to install, not to mention how much cheaper it is than a coil conversion. It will extend your wheelbase a few inches (I'm sitting at about 84-85" right now) and that always helps, too. Brent (at Trail Tough) is a great guy, and I would definitely recommend him. ~Steve
lojones 06-01-2002, 10:20 AM I have the Shaffer's/RRO coil kit. It took 1 year and 1 week to get to me, So yes the wait is long hehe. I installed it in the month before Memorial Day and took it out last weekend for some runs. It performed flawless except for my y-link bushing disintegrating. I think the angle may be a bit off or i over tightened it.
You can see some pictures of the coil install at my website.
Last i talked with Mike Shaffer he was talking about not making the kit anymore because they take too long and everyone is pissed. He may have changed his mind though...
I would recommend the YJ kit or the Spidertrax setup with coils in the front.
M.Martian 06-01-2002, 10:23 AM The coil setup is the one from Mike Shaffer. It is a nice setup. At last years Suzuki on the Rocks up at the Rubicon, there were 2 rigs running it. Unfortunately I don't have any pics handy of them except for this one. There are a lot of other threads on the board about this setup. One of the 2 people are here. Look for Samit Patel, he's running a white zuk with the prototype suspension.
I have the CSC YJ setup with a shackle reversal. The kit is no longer made since CSC went out of business. The ride is nice, flex is great. I haven't seen the TT setup first hand, but from what I've heard it works really well. Dave as Asian Autoparts of AZ also has a YJ kit, but it is weld-in and it's based on the CSC setup (s/r). Also a nice kit, just depends on if you want missing links or s/r.

yager 06-01-2002, 04:30 PM Hey Newbe !
I'm in NY visiting the folks but will be back next week with my zuke.
I have dumped my rear leaf "funky" suspension and have some new coil parts on order. Basically its a some 14" x 5" coils with some weight jackers. We scaled my car on my bros cool race car scales and based on that i went with some 150# coils for now.
Ill post full numbers with f/r % when i get home was very interesting...but I scaled ~2700 fully loaded with driver and simulated gear. (thats w/ toy axle swap and full exo cage also)
If the springs are too light ill add some rubbers or jump to 175s
good luck, pm me next week and you can swing by to check out my junk if your interested...

Mr.Zuki 06-01-2002, 07:18 PM I am a new member here as well.
I run a customised HHOR system to fit SJ. I built it for myself so was able to customise everything to work for me. I used a stock pair of coils out of an EB Bronco. The coil rate on them seems to be perfect for how far inboard I mounted them. As for flex the strech as far as I would want a coil to and colaps to coilbound. After I do my 4.3 swap I am going to do a front coil swap. For ride quality and flex, I would have to say go coils!

jims4x4 06-01-2002, 09:52 PM got the Trail Tough yj kit here with missing links front and rear and man does it drop jaws here when I pull up to a jeep ride or ramp fest and walk all the way up ,did the same pose on a 55 gallon drum the other day and had great contact pressure to the ground did not feel like I was sweating the springs at all/yj kit=cheap and easy.....just do it man:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
NC Zuk 06-02-2002, 08:56 AM Well, you guys won't believe this, but when I talked to RRO on thursday last week, thay said that they could have the coil setup to me in about two weeks! I can see it now, the phones at RRO are going to be ring off the hook tomorrow morning! Unfortunately, it won't be me calling. I am currently in Argentina and won't be back in the States for another 2 weeks. Ya know, I am dying to have the coil setup, but I have a feeling thet it would be unrealistic to believe that I would have it any time soon. I travel alot and only have a limited time to ride and wrench, so time to me is at a premium. If anyone else that has the Mike Schaffer kit have pics, send them my way as I just haven't given up hope that I can do the project. Oh, if any of you other zukaholics have thought of putting together a kit of your own, give me a shout! ~ Art Lilley
samiguy 06-02-2002, 10:30 AM I talked to one of Shaffers guys a few days ago. They had an extra kit ready to ship to the next guy who orders and have taken care of their production issues and can now get them made quickly. Mines in the mail, cant wait!

As of the 6-1-02 if you order a kit from SHAFFER'S OFFROAD all kits ship in 30 days or its 1/2 price! And RRO no longer sales the shaffer kit. I think they are building there own....

Man, you are killing me!!!!!!
Anyway, as you will see by the message below, I am EXTREMELY BORED since my ZUK is 6000 miles away!!! So, I decided to compare costs between the Coil and the YJ setup. This is the parts package I would be purchasing to do my whole suspension setup. :bounce: The coils can actually be cheaper if you don't have access to used YJ springs. Any non-believers can do the math yourself.
Mike Schaffer, if you see this, please PM me. I have alot of questions!!!
Schaffer/RRO Coil 1678.00
Pad Hard Bar kit
Front and rear coils kit
Z-bar link (delete 129.00) kit
2 ea drive shaft spacers kit
7” longer brakelines 3 ea kit
7” longer brakeline 28.00
Upper front shock mounts kit
Lower front shock mount kit
Upper rear Shock mounts kit
Lower rear shock mount kit
4 doestch tech 8000 shocks 135.00
knuckle over steering 279.00
Extended slip yoke 75.00
Total cost 2066.00
Trail Tough YJ Kit 1258.00
Front YJ kit with Missing Link kit
Rear YJ Spring Suspension kit kit
Knuckle-Over Steering kit
4 extended brake lines kit
2 bushing sets kit
2 one inch driveline spacers kit
one extended slip yoke kit
4 DT 8000 series Prerunner shocks kit
Upper front shock mounts kit
Lower front shock mount kit
Upper rear Shock mounts 39.00
Lower rear shock mount kit
2 sets spring perches kit
Pan Hard Bar (TT or spidertrax) 299.00
4 used YJ springs 160.00
Total Cost with used springs 1756.00
4 new YJ Springs 516.00
Total cost with new YJ springs 2112.00
As you can see, i deleted the z-link in favor of the knuckle over in the coil setup, and had to add a few odds and ends to make the packages even. The relatively close cost makes it even harder to choose. Can somebody make up my mind??????? /:confused:
Bill4rest 06-02-2002, 03:24 PM her is a pic of the shaffer kit:)
NC Zuk 06-02-2002, 03:33 PM Bill,
I really appreciate the warm welcome that all have extended to me as a newbie, but, you really didn't have to roll your zuk over on its side just so that I could have a pic! Thank's, I owe you one!!~ art Lilley
Bill4rest 06-02-2002, 03:41 PM I'll make up your mind! SHAFFER KIT ALL THE WAY!! I have seen this susp WORK, and WORK great! it is a solid feel on the street (unlike missing links). The coils do have some body roll on the street but it is not bad if you run 9000's, or you don't drive it like a sports car. My low down.......
coils
-cushy ride yes++
-Solid on road feel ++
-Awsome flex ++
-no axle wrap! ++
-Climbs hills unlike any leaf set up I've seen
-Made from a fabicator that used to build class 7s race trucks++
--Edit--- sweet approach and deparcher angles limited to bumpers and not the spring hanger/shackles....
YJ setup
-axle wrap? not unless you have a traction bar-
-solid on road feel? missing links com awn
-climbing hills? missing links, heello is this thing on?
-yes it dose flex
-cushy ride? yes
If I had $2000 to burn? no doubt about it shaffer all the way.
Bill4rest 06-02-2002, 03:43 PM Oh that's ok it's not my truck:D But here is another shot, it's the only other pic I have
Shrock 06-02-2002, 04:08 PM I wonder if the kit Glen is quote is their new kit. Did you ask. I'd be curious to see what it looks like anyway.

Rockrat 06-02-2002, 06:09 PM What kind of price is the kit going for and can it be adapted to Toy
axles
NC Zuk 06-02-2002, 06:22 PM Well, actually when I called RRO, I spoke to someone named Shawn. I don't have a clue as to if he has a clue. Glenn has nothing to do with this. I will be calling back tomorrow (yes from Argentina!) to find out the skinny on the kit. I'll find out if it is his, or Mike's kit. I'll also be calling Mike and will post my findings. The main thing about this project is that it has to be streetable. I drive my zuk 20 miles to work every day and want to keep it that way.
Thanks!~Art

CATCLAWEZ 06-03-2002, 03:34 PM Send your friend over Bill the kit is going on my sami now.
NC Zuk 06-03-2002, 07:32 PM Well, my research is almost complete. Today I talked to Mike Schaffer and man, does that guy have a lot of knowledge to share!!!! As for his coil kit, he actually has one in stock as we speak and more will be done very soon. For those of you that have heard of problems concerning the Ford radius Bushing on the rear tri-link, it is currently being changed to a heim joint. He said that it will alleviate the few problems that were encountered with the ford bushing.
As for RRO, yes they have changed manufacturers and claim that they currently have 16 coil kits, 13 of which are spoken for. That leaves 3 available to anyone else out there that is seriously interested in the kit. As for the differences, I am waiting on a reply from Glenn. I spoke to Chris at the shop today but he said to find out more specifics, I should talk to Glenn. Easier said than done when you are in the States!!!! Glenn, answer your e-mail!
Anyway, the price for each kit is within 10 dollars of each other so the real question is which kit is actually better. (Mikes kit needs additional parts to equal the RRO kit, but the total cost after buying said parts is that close)
Either way, I'll soon be placing an order for a coil kit, the only question is from who. I'll let you know as soon as I figure it out.
Thanks to all who have sent pics and who gave their 2 cents, Zuk owners are way cool!

Dial 1-888-801-7271 and ask. Here is part of the e-mail that I got from RRO.
We are shipping kits this week for those who have them on order. Sounds like you're "out of town" though :^) We've got 16 kits built, only 13 are sold at this time. If you do miss this batch, we'll have another batch ready about the 25th of this month.

Just out of curiosity, why was the Schaffer kit having problems with the ford radius bushing link? I don't see how one heim joint will give enough motion to pivot off of. And what does schaffer's kit use for the side links? It looks like just bushings? or maybe Johnny joints??

My y-link bushings fell apart after about 4 hours of wheelin. Mike is out of town so i havent been able to talk it through with him to see what the problem was; too tight, too lose, too much lube, wrong angle...
The bushings on the links are Johnny Joints.
ZuksRule 06-05-2002, 05:03 PM Maybe i missed it, but it looks like you do not plan to upgrade to bigger/stronger driveshafts. Your front shaft will hit the crossmember at droop, and with that much lift stock u-joints go :nuke: a lot. Don't waste time/money adding extended slipyokes or spacers to stock shafts. You're already spending 2k, whats a few hundred more? :D :D Do it right the first time, and save a headache.

No, you didn't miss anything. I didn't mention anything about Drive Shafts or axel upgrades. The truth is that I have about 4500 to invest and that is part of my planned project. I haven't decided on which drive shafts to go with so this is sure to open a new discussion. Currently, I have 5:38 R&P but will be selling them as I am reverting back to (don't say it) stock R&P ratios and adding a Sumo case or GRS1. Mike and I talked extensively and for my wheeling needs he gave me alot of sound advice. I have a short and long term plan in place and the shafts are definately in the short term as well as the new t-case.
It will be interesting to hear all of you bag on me about stock R&P ratios! But, I'm looking forward to it!!!!!!
So, let's have it, the good, bad, and the ugly on aftermarket drive shafts.

Did you look at what you get?
With Mikes kit (nothing wrong with it, it's the original coil kit) you get only the Coils, mounts, and control arms for 1300$. Nothing else. No shocks or shock mounts at all, no brake lines, no spacers or shafts, and no steering kit. (Still a great value as it comes)
Try adding up what it would cost to buy 4 DT shocks, upper and lower shock mounts (front and rear), extended brake lines, 2 KAD drive shafts, and a Knuckle over steering system. (all included in the RRO Deluxe kit.) Can you say $$$$$$$$$$$$$
No Brainer, you will save SOOOOOOOO much money. Do the math.
