: Steering wheel swap question.
cj8scrambld 06-01-2002, 01:01 PM Hey all,
Just a quick question here. Will a steering wheel from say a 1994 GM p/u fit onto a 1979 CJ column? I know I could try it but I do not have a GM wheel and don't want to waste $$ if it is not going to work. Thanks for anhy help. John
muddyxj 06-01-2002, 06:28 PM just a quick ?, why a GM wheel? you could get a Grant wheel and a kit to make it fit without much hassle.
stoneyxj 06-01-2002, 06:30 PM your a homo. go buy a GM truck if you want a GM steering wheel so bad. try that ? on JU.

cj8scrambld 06-01-2002, 10:55 PM 87XJ, it just so happens my D.D. is a GM product...hence why I wanted to use the wheel and I also don't want to pirate my D.D., so open your mind before you open your mouth (via words) and start flipping others off....thanks GPN Family, very nicely put, let me get you a  . Besides, the only part that is Jeep on this project is the body. Isn't that why we all love Jeeps so much? For their willingness to be BUILT. MuddyXJ, I will be looking into Grants. Some of the more reasonable ones seem to have that foam grip crap that rots out in no time, I will look into the ones with the ?vinyl cushion grip. Thanks again for the positive responses. Some people just have toooo much time on their hands. John

at the risk of getting back on topic,
be careful with the size of the steering wheel you ultimately go with. unless you run a tilt, it can be a tight fit between the steering wheel and the seat in a stock Jeep.
I think I just used an old t-shirt as padding and used a cheapie $10 (corinthian!) leather steering wheel cover from pep-boys.
It actually looks decent, and it's nicer than the OEM "School bus" steering wheel.
bluesman2a 06-03-2002, 10:12 AM Just threw a Grant 773 on mine last night. I have the GM tilt column. Super simple, about $60 including the install kit. Took 15 minutes to do the whole thing. The horn is a little wierd, look twice at the instructions for that one.
The flat black, 13" wheel looks much more at home on my Hammerite'd rig.
My only concern is the adapter they use. I have a dim memory of somebody around here bitchin' about stripping one out, but figured I would see how one holds up in my garage-queen.
Welby 06-03-2002, 10:41 AM I put a Grant wheel on my YJ. It was nice, but the horn button kept popping off, and the horn would go nonstop until I got under the hood and unplugged it. Really cheesy how they have that set up. I just left my horn unplugged all the time after putting that wheel on.
CJ5-Man 06-03-2002, 01:35 PM I've stripped 3 grant steering wheel adapters out, avoid them if you can, I've got a stock wheel to go on there as soon as this 4th one strips.
rckjeep 06-08-2002, 10:40 PM In stead of being some drunk putz, I'll tell you that it should work. I put a Grant wheel and adapter from my 92 S10 on my 77 CJ7. It works fine. AMC used parts from every manufacture. Ford ignitions, GM columns, etc. Good luck. see you on the trail.
