: Buggy I saw at Attica, IN Today....(pics)
CoryL 06-01-2002, 04:11 PM I know most of you guys out west are thinking big deal...
But seeing one in Indiana is COOL!
I didn't get to talk to Troy (I am assuming it's his) about it, but I snapped some pics before I took off. Coilovers, 60s, 4-links, not sure on motor or tranny, but the t-case is an Atlas2.

You'll notice in the last pic that it has two steering wheels. Only one is connected to the steering shaft. I guess the second one is for the co-pilot so he can feel special too! :usa:
Realsquash 06-01-2002, 05:15 PM Holy steering arm Batman!
Squash
Wasn't there another thread about having 2 wheels???
nice jeep liberty. :D
lol on the sig.
but you forgot the part about frosty spending a month in the hospital when tin bender shot us down with a marine style flare gun and we caught on fire and crashed into the ground.
Sloan 06-01-2002, 06:31 PM Funny thing is I wouldn't be surprised if those tube buggies aren't street legal in Indiana.:D
Jeepskickass 06-01-2002, 06:57 PM What's up with the winch cable hooked to the steering ram? Just a place to keep it from flopping around?

Okay, that makes sense. Ramstein and I were going to try that on his buggy, but weight transfer wasn't a problem, so we never bothered. Must be the links...
steelman 06-01-2002, 07:42 PM if you take the hood and grill off, it looks a lot like Shannon Camball's rig he ran last year in ARCA.

I think you're right. last time we talked he said something about possibly selling the sniper ( I think he changed his mind) and getting a new buggy. looks like he got the buggy anyway.
looks sweet :smokin:
Jeepmangled87 06-01-2002, 09:29 PM I like it, I like it alot.
chumly2071 06-02-2002, 07:35 PM Yup, that is Troy's rig. He was telling us about the liberty sheetmetal he was having made to put on it at the Superlift event we were trail guides at in April. I believe there was a sticker on it somewhere saying Campbell Enterprises. Cool rig, especially in Indiana. As far as licensing buggies, I was talking to a guy this weekend from over there, and it doesn't sound like a big deal to get a buggy registered. Second hand info, facts need checked.
Also of note, Troy was trying to sell his old fancy tube beder to help fund his new cnc bender. Sounds like he's getting more into buggy construction or something.

Actually, I think Troy did sell the sniper. It was at Summer Carrol's campground when we were up there the first weekend in May. Then we seen it the next day running in the dunes. It wasn't Troy driving, and I don't think it was anyone of his workers or buddies driving it either. But I may be wrong. But being at the campground pretty much confirmed to me that he had sold it.

Sloan, everything is street legal in Indiana. Or if its not, they're not going to actually pull you over for it anyway. Gotta love it:smokin:
That is a sweet rig! Don't rule out the BadLands for attracting some cool rides though. I have seen quite a few nice ones pull up on trailers, maybe not that nice, but still impressive. Last time I was there, I even saw some big-ass 'Mog down by the concession stand.

HOMEMADE VAPORIZERS (http://homemadevaporizers.info/)
SpaceGhost 06-03-2002, 06:35 AM That rig is in fact a Shannon Campbell that Troy picked up last summer. Yes he competed with it in Las Cruces last November, but not an ARCA event, was the Warn series. Original configuration was SO front and 1/4 elliptical rear. He has been experimenting with the coils and just did the front end a few weeks ago. The Liberty panels where treated to a professional sectioning so they would fit and look somewhat like they belong there. I believe the motor is a sbc vortec, 400 auto to Atlas 2 and it's riding on 42"s.
The second steering wheel is pinned to the roll cage for passenger comfort and something to hold onto.
The sniper was sold last fall after the Las Cruces trip, and I think sold again over the winter. After Cruise Moab last summer he also picked up a new Scorpion chassis on his way back from Moab. At that time he had one of each, Sniper, Campbell and the fresh, unfinished Scorpion. The Scorpion was sold to a guy from Michigan, who proceeded to finish it and had it out a couple of weeks ago at Attica. I posted a couple of shots of the rear drooped and stuffed here (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=57340)
The MOG is Troy's. It's a cab over flat bed truck in really good condition. The use it to recover the worst stucks, patrol the park and do trail maint. Can you say slowwwwwwwwwwwww.
There are several highly modified rigs that are regulars at the park. A couple in particular are the sammis of Todd and Robbie. Todd's is the Snipe, and it is fitted with 42's on dana 60's, coil overs, tubed chassis with the stock motor, tranny and a stock tcase. A glimpse of it is in the first pic posted, top right. Robbies is a black tubed sammi with a mercedes diesel, an auto tranny and a d300. He is running coils from a jeep in the rear and SO in the front. He just completed a retube and new cage, complete with an aluminum floorpan, removing the sammi cowl and remaining sami pannels (all beat to hell). The first trip out we ran most of the obstacles we play on, trying lines that test the work to max. On one slick rock face that emerges from Touchdown Creek, he decided to drive down a steep ledge that drops into the creek. It ended very quickly with him taking a ride, endo and rolling onto his side in the creek. The recovery was faster than my camera skills and after adding a quart of tranny fluid off we went.
Any of you that are withing a reasonable drive and haven't been to the Badlands need to add it to your must do list! Hope to see some of you at the Ultimate Tour Pirate Style stop on June 25th.
And finally, Yes Sloan, you can actually get tags for that in Indiana. For reasons I don't know or understand, all vehicle inspections have been stopped for over 15 years. No smog checks either. Some discretion is awarded to law enforcement now, but out in the country (Attica) it is permissable to drive damn near anything short distances.
Welby 06-03-2002, 07:17 AM Sweet!, but why so much bumpstop??

I'm guessing there's a little compression in the rubber, but mainly that the 4-5" that far in means quite a bit more movement at the tire

That makes sense. I didn't think about how far inboard they were... :)
riffman 06-03-2002, 09:36 AM that thing is cool as smack. when the superlift even came to attica, i helped "judge" the rockcrawling event. Troy came out there to compete in that rig. talk about sweet. the competitors had 10 minutes to complete the course that we setup before hand (which we would have made harder, had we known he was coming out there!!) there were a start gate, an end gate, and 4 interemediate gates. 5 points off for each interemediate gate passed, and some other points added for backing up, using tools, blah blah blah. to make a long story short, some of the less experienced drivers did the course in about 6 minutes or so...at about 40+ points. troys run in that thing? -20 points, in 1 minute flat!!!
i know i konw...some of you westies are like big deal...but to us flatlanders, THATS SWEET!!!!!
ill be quiet now.

Thats Gordon Chilchrist's new rig. He bought the scorpion chassis and went to work on it over the winter. Still putting the finishing touches on it. It is an awesome piece of work. Lots of anti-squat though. The things looks like a spider when it takes off to run. Almost like its going to jump.

You said it yourself right there- experience. I'm not saying that rig isn't tits, but a good driver makes a huge difference. That's troys backyard and he competes also. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that puts him head and shoulders above the rest to start with.
