: Converting a 2WD TH400 to 4WD
RebelRider 05-21-2007, 12:01 PM I have a chance to pick up a built TH400 for a good price. the thing is that its a 2wd model. I know the output shaft will be too long. where can i find a 4wd output? junk yards want me to buy and pull a whole tranny, Which i dont want to do. I've heard of people cutting down the out-put also. has anyone ever done this. Thanks
Lil'John 05-21-2007, 12:31 PM Goto a pick and pull or a transmission shop... both are good options... and of course, don't forget you have to pull apart that built TH400 to swap output shafts :(
b454rat 05-21-2007, 01:57 PM What t-case are you gonna put on it?? IIRC 2wd trans are the same length as later model 4wds. I took a 2wd 400, with a 208/241 adaptor and a 2" spacer bolted a Ford 205. You'll need the short style 205 input.

Grumpy_old_fart 05-21-2007, 02:17 PM the early 8 bolt pattern style NP205 for th400 takes the regular short shaft output from a 2wd trans. same one with a bolt yoke will work on a dana 20..
The NP241/np208 use the same output, sticks out about 3 inches.
NP203 sticks out about an inch and a half.
Dont cut it down, just get it done right the first time, if you even have to swap it out.

This is where I got a 4wd output for mine. Look about 2/3 of the way down, item 68. Used an adapter from advance.
abig84 05-21-2007, 06:49 PM yeah as grumpy said, the 205 uses the 2wd shaft. i found that out when i tried to put on a 205 on 400 that had a 208 behind it. and the trans shop said i needed to put a 2wd shaft in there for it to work.

wow.. those guys bring the butt hurt.
RebelRider 05-21-2007, 11:04 PM I have a pic but I cant put it up on the page. So since my np205 has a slip yoke, can it be an early model style, thus using the 2wd shaft? thanks for the help

go to a pick your part and just take apart a tranney there. they will be a bit confused when you try to buy only an out put shaft instead of a trannty tho you might even get away by just saying its a cv axle or some shit. oh and if they offer a warrenty just go back and return your old one haha.
g-wizz 05-21-2007, 11:36 PM if you got room divorce mount your t case, depending on what t case you plan to use of course.
abig84 05-22-2007, 05:46 AM my 205 has a slip yolk. came out of a 82 k30
Shaker 05-22-2007, 07:52 AM my experience is the slip yoke 205 came from the last few years of the 205 exsistance....you can switch it out with a fixed yoke pretty direct swap. As far as the 400 output you can take the output shafts and switch them depending on what x-case/adapter your gonna use.,..
Grumpy_old_fart 05-22-2007, 08:34 AM if its a slip yoke, and doesnt have the round faced adapter pattern on the front of the transfer case, then a short shaft 2wd transmission will bolt right to the factory adapter. No Muss, no Fuss... no bullshit.
RebelRider 05-22-2007, 09:45 AM Thanks again fella's
jeffers389 07-11-2007, 08:51 AM so if I'm trying to put a np208 on a th400 2wd that came out of a truck, would it have the right short 2wd shaft to bolt up to the X-fer case?
Grumpy_old_fart 07-11-2007, 09:07 AM you would need the Np208/np241 shaft.
it sticks out of the trans about 2 inches. I will post a photo later.
RebelRider 07-11-2007, 09:49 AM well, it seems finding a 4wd th400 around herre is harder then it seems, so i just had a th350 built up. thanks fella's
Grumpy_old_fart 07-11-2007, 09:01 PM Heres a photo of a TH400-NP205 shaft, also used for stock 2wd applications with the short tail housing, and for Dana 20.

Here are two shorter shafts, the tallest is for the NP208/np241 outputs. the short one is the np203 shaft.

the last shaft shown here is the quadratrac shaft, coarse spline in nature...
