: Need help choosing a new truck to tow boat
NASTJ 05-23-2007, 05:44 AM 29' center console that weighs in at about a total of 13,000lbs all loaded up with the trailer.
Looking for a new truck, but the manufactures towing ratings are confusing. What truck can handle this? Do I need a wewight distributing hitch, or just the straight hitch?
I definately want the diesel and am currently leaning toward the new dodge with the 6.7L cummins.
Please help.
zukota 05-23-2007, 07:08 AM so how much is gas on the water these days? $4 - $5 ?

Xjcrawler736 05-23-2007, 07:08 AM Here is the towing guide that dodge has on their site.

This is what I would look at getting.
2007 RAM 3500
Laramie, Quad Cab, 4x4, 6.25 Ft, 6.7-Liter CumminsŪ Turbo Diesel Engine, 6-Speed Automatic 68RFE Transmission
With 3.73 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 13750 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=10100
Payload[i]=3007
Curb Weight[i]=7093
Curb WeightFront/Rear=4329/2764
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6200
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=21000
With 4.10 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 15750 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=10100
Payload[i]=3007
Curb Weight[i]=7093
Curb WeightFront/Rear=4329/2764
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6200
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=23000
I'm sure the other companies have sites like this too.

Just the typical reply around here with nothing usefull to add to a thread:p
I do no think any of the oem hitches are rated for 13 000 lb except the DRW Ford 2.5". They all require WD for that big of a trailer. All of the diesels SRW 1 ton can handle that weight, depending on your tongue weight.
If you like the Dodge the best, get a 3500 SRW or DRW, get a good 14 000 lb rated weight distributing hitch, and either run slightly overloaded for your factory hitch (Emievel has tested it to much higher) or spend a couple hundred and buy an aftermarket Class V. (I have a Putnam XDR class V rated at 16 000 lb WD).
The Chevy or Ford would also work fine, but the one ton is preferable in either.
NASTJ 05-23-2007, 09:38 AM thanks for the help. that is what I found to be confusing, where they rate the truck for one thing and then put say a class IV hitch on it that obviously doesn't support that much weight.
The main reason for worrying so much aobut it is for the insurance, if something did happen, I don't want them saying I was overloaded and it was all my fault.

and that is better than another ford vs. chevy vs. dodge thread - like we need another one of those :shaking:
if he asks a real question, maybe he would get a real answer.
Never Monday 05-23-2007, 05:35 PM I've towed larger with my 2500 Dodge, 15,600 loaded. The factory hitch is the same part number between the 2500 and 3500 SRW or DRW.
I'd stay away from the 4.10 and get the 3.73 if it's going to be a DD. What is the beam on the boat. Some states might make you get and OS permit and others (SC) will require DRW for any thing over 10'.
NASTJ 05-24-2007, 05:19 AM she sits right over 10' wide. I'll look into that. Thanks.
LeviGarrett76 05-24-2007, 07:29 AM how often will you be towing it, how far and will you be pulling other things often?
NASTJ 05-24-2007, 09:00 AM Just for pulling the boat. The longest trip would be about 2 hours to the outer banks of NC to go offshore.
