My alternator burned up last night. My Jeep is sitting in a field right now. I need to get it home.
I would like to simply bypass the alternator altogether and just drive home on the battery. However the belt system on it is only one belt to run everything (87 Cherokee). Is there anyway to just eliminate the alternator problem without losing my water pump, fan, power steering? From your experience is there a belt from another car that I can use? One that is much shorter so I can simply not turn the alternator.

If your 87 is V belt panty hose will work.
You can also buy emergency belts at most auto parts stores that are adjustable.

If your alternator bearings froze, you will need to get a shorter belt. If the alternator is your adjuster, then you may have a time prying it on or you could remove the water pump pulley and reinstall it with the belt on. Still not easy. If it still turns, then just disconnent the wires and you should be O.K. I've done both a number of times on my old Fords, but none of them had CPU's in them. Don't know if yours does or not and if it would matter.
BTW - Tried the pantyhose thing before and everytime you would rev the engine, the hose would blow off. Wish wish some of the chicks I dated worked that way.:flipoff2:

Why not just beg, borrow or steal another alternator? You're going to need one any how?

I ended up just buying another alternator and changing it out there. The alternator was fried, and I needed a new one anyway. I wanted to get it home, because I didn't think that I would be able to find an alternator on a Sunday morning around here.
