i'm asking b/c i bought a 14 bolt the other day and just took the guys word for it that it was equipped w/ a detroit. it came out of an '85 military 1 ton and has 4.56 gears. i popped the cover but and it looked like a normal 14 bolt carrier. is there a way to identify if it's got a detroit inside? all i've heard all the lines of a factory locker is the gov-lock. does the gov-lock use the factory carrier?
thanks for help- russel

A Gov-Loc will have 3 pins for the spider gears. An open carrier, which a Detroit replaces the spiders, has 4. There are some other differences between the two, but I don't have any pictures saved. If it has 4 pins, and both axles spin in the same direction, it will be a detroit. I believe all of the military 14's came w/Detroits.

lets rephrase that to all millitary axles were supposed to be equipped with detroits. I have seen a few replacements that didn't have it.
just pop the carrier apart and look.

The military 14 bolts had detroits. The reason it looks like a regular carrier is because it IS a regular carrier. That's why Detroits are so cheap for 14-bolts. They reuse the original carriers.
