It has to do more with my financial controller.

Of course he wants his H2 first, then he will have to approve the H3.

It's about time they added a V8, should have been available from the beginning. The 5 cylinder is a complete dog. We were looking at buying 5 of them at work but decided that while the small cargo area was doable, they would be painful to drive as many miles as we do since they can't get out of their own way.

and by "Major" you mean Overpriced, available to anybody bolt on mods right? :flipoff2:

Actually, mine is custom, as in they used my rig to prototype :flipoff2:

Don't like msot hummers, usualyl just the original hummer stuff.. the H1 type deals. I'd trade my Jeep for that stock anyday, but my Jeep aint that great to start with. :grinpimp: But I luv it.

Glad to see this AMERICAN vehicle hit the site, lot more people wheel the H1s than people realize. My dad took some Hummer group up to Telico one time, got home video of it.

I had lots of them over the years (6), got rid of my 98 Open Top last year...

Now I have none :(

I've been involved with Hummers/AM General since 1995. One of the highlights was wheeling the 800 Acre AMG Test Track in Indiana in 2000

that didn't work because it was not the actual image you linked to, but a PHP call for it. a lot of file upload sites do that so you can't embed images and steal bandwidth. But I put it here for ya.

Yes a few do go off road. Their are so few where I live I had to Hook up with a Jeep Club. I followed 3 Heavy mod. Jeeps Sunday and they rocked my world. Bent sliders, missing paint, and smashed up bumpers. They were impressed and i was puckerd but it is the only way I told my wife I would own one is if I get to pound it.

I think you will begin to see more out on the trails. Especially H2's as they start to get second owners and the prices come down. Every H2 out there came with 35's, a rear e-locker, functional factory sliders, full size spare, a realaviely flat bottom, plenty of power, excelent approach/departure angles, plenty of space to haul stuff/people, four external recovery points, and all of the creature comforts inside.

f5fstop...

The reason im more so surprised about the Hummers is initial cost. A jeep can be picked up for 20-24 for new while the lowest price new hummer is 30k. In addition second hand H2's are still higher priced then most other 4x4s. Guess mainly just the price.

Nice rig! you can get a Military one for about 15-20K at auction?

The military is not supposed to be releasing anymore. DOT has been notified by AM General that they do not meet DOT standards. HMMWV's were never sold to the public from the government-they were traded to a company for contract work through a loophole that has since been closed. The ones you see in Civilians hands are it...you pretty much ahve to buy one from someone who already has one-or pick one up from a limited amount of companies that still have a supply from the divided lots bought some years ago.

You cannot get one from a government liquidation auction-unless you want to piece them together after their components have been torched into scrap metal sized pieces.

You can get a turnkey HMMWV starting in the 20K range if you shop around and watch ebay. Fully restored may run as high as 35-45k depending on the model. Mine has been appraised higher because of the rare military 6.5 Turbo and overdrive transmission that was updated prior to it release, as well as dual tanks, pieces of armor, body lift and modified suspension/shocks, and updated seats.

Because you have no seen all the other shit they build that hardly works and falls apart.

I guess you really know since you get to watch them attempt to climb simple things like a little 2ft tree stump with 38s and lift a tire. Maybe you should come check the shop out and bring your hummer to them. They specialize in 26" spinners too.

Just looks like some of the stuff they build, and the logo looks just like it. So why not ask?

ron b
08-08-2007, 01:51 AM
I believe it's a military requirement for the humvees (and other militery vehicles) to have the auto tranny so anyone can drive it -- the h1, being the same thing, is also auto.

actionpaintball
08-08-2007, 08:18 AM
The military HMMWV and civilian H1 Hummer were never offered with a manual transmission in regular production. I have seen some conversions-but I am not aware of any that came that way off the assembly line.

One guy who is undergeared and/or does not know how to drive a stick offroad does not make one type of transmission better or worse.

I saw a fat chick in a yellow YJ with an automatic behind a 4.0L attack a rock garden at 15mph and bounce all over the place. does that mean 4.0s have too much power? that fat chicks can't drive? that leaf springs can't crawl? no, just a stupid (annoying knowitall in this case) driver who can't wheel.

MudOnTheTireS10
08-08-2007, 03:04 PM
I agree.
I have a manual and wouldn't switch to an auto for nothing.
Not to mention, in most cases, manual transmissions are stronger than autos. Plus, you tear up an auto and its $$$. Tear up a manual and it's general just the clutch....unless you can't drive and really fubar'd something. :D

Added a few updates to the H3-

Offroad package wheels and 33" tires
Tinted front windows
2" leveling lift
Rola Cargo Rack
Custom built light rail

Hopefully I'll have some new offroad photos from this weekend snow bash. But for now, a driveway shot.

I picked up my H1 a few months back:

I looked at all sorts of H1's over the last year or so. The truck I was looking for had to be a turbo diesel and it had to be an upgraded block.

I looked at an Alpha but I can't justify spending $1,600/mo for a vehicle that's not generating income for me. I almost jumped on a few cheap [$20-27k] 6.5 NA's but held out for a 6.5 TD. I eventually got this 1998 that had most of the drive train replaced under GMPP. It has the new upgraded block. The only original parts on the drive train that isn't relatively new is the geared hubs, but with maintenance those will last forever.

I'm currently redoing the interior, there is some significant uv fading on the rear tan plastic which I'll fix. Later in 08, I'll get the truck completely repainted [same color], and fix some minor body stuff. I'll also replace all the rubber seals and liners and put the 2002 mirrors on the truck. I already got new 17" OEM wheels, which I'll put on next month with a set of BFG T/A KO's 37x12.5x17's. I'm currently running a 50/50 Biodiesel #2 mix, the truck exhaust smells like burnt veggie oil now.

Added a picture of my interior, you can compare it to the Alpha 06 / 2004 interior shown above:

The old H1 interior is a pretty crappy design, the front interior on my truck is new however, and is from a 2001 complete with the monsoon sound bar which wasn't an option back in 98. I looked into installing an Alpha interior on my truck, it would run about $4-5k so I'll just clean up what I got for now.

I'm also looking for a HMMWV AM General branded tailgate to repaint for the truck :).

Cheap home depot paint...I just scuffed them really thouroghly with a scotch brite pad (used up 1 pad per wheel) and then followed the directions on the can (3 light coats waiting 5 minutes between coats in about 70 degree weather). I get them dirty weekly at my farm and pressure wash them weekly and luckily, I havent had any chipping, etc. But even if I do, it will be easy touch ups. My first set I went trough the hassle of removing the tires and getting them powder coated. But on rocks, it will chip off still, so I just rattle canned the second set.

Here are some pics:
