: Gear Brands...Is one better than the other?

I've been getting quotes on 4.56 gears and every shop I've talked to has quoted me on different gear brands...I want something durable even if I have to pay a little more.

Is there a preferred gear brand out there? Any brand I should stay away from?

Here are the brands I've been quoted on...

Sierra Gear (twice)
Superior Gears (twice)
Precision Gears
Genuine Gears

Are any of these more favorable than the others?

The lowest quote came from a shop called 4Wheel Direct in El Cajon, CA. They quoted me at $1400 for both axles. Is this a good deal?

I've seen full buggy builds on here using Yukon gears. I'd say that's a good sign.

I've seen people run screaming from Genuine gears.

$1400 for both axles...does that include new carriers? What vehicle? Original gear ratio? Obviously it includes install...up here it's a $600 per axle flat rate at the tranny shop to set up gears. I can get it done for $250 per axle, but it's in a friend's garage. said friend knows his stuff and has the tools though, just doesn't work for someone else who needs to pay overhead.

Yukon seems pretty popular, as well as superior. Call some well known fab shops and talk to 'em for a bit.

Shops that come to mind are Off-Road Design and Blue Torch Fab. Just make sure you buy parts from them when ready to thank them for spending time to talk to you.

I need to get 4.88's for the wife's TJ, on a budget of course.

I have Yukons in my Jeep and have been happy with them, no quality hesitations to get those again.

But both the yukons and precisions are nearly $50 more per set than Genuine. Is it REALLY worth spending the extra $50 at each end?

I'm looking for FIRST hand accounts of genuine gear experience. Second hand is ok, only if you PERSONALLY knew the person. No need for anyone repeating what they read on a website, since you really don't know if what was said is folk lore or not.

Thanks.,

Yes, it's worth the 50 bucks. unless you like swapping gears all the time. Honestly, I know guys who have had great luck with GG, and guys who hate them, and will never own another set. Personally, I just run Yukons.

I will be going with yukon again if I change gears. Some of the cheaper gear sets can have trouble with being soft and chipping teeth. $1400 seems high if its just for the gears, setup kits and labor.

Well, instead of repeating what's on the website, I'll just give you a few links to it:

www.gearinstalls.com (here's two links specifically mentioning them... http://www.gearinstalls.com/ray.htm, and http://www.gearinstalls.com/jake.htm. I'm sure poking around a bit you'll find more)

There are several mentions of the quality flaws with Genuine Gears there. The author does appear to speak from 1st-hand experience.

I bought Yukon 8.8" 5.13s, and am completely happy with them. I was able to get an almost textbook-perfect pattern on them.

I set up gears for Club members (Ridgerunners). If they get Genuine they are on ther own.I will not set them up. Had good luck with Superior or Yukon.

I've been running Sierra Gears for 3 1/2 years and I've never had a problem. I"m running 39.5 Irocks, doubler, 5.29's and flog the shit out of it. Just yesterday I was looking at the stock Toyota 4.30's and my 5.29"s and the Sierra's look quite a bit beefier.

I huge part in gears lasting a long time is in the set up. Too much slop and they'll break, too tight and they'll get hot. Find someone who know how to set up gears the right way and you shouldn't have a problem with any of the choices. Well maybe the Genuine crap.
