alright, this may be basic newbie info, sorry about that, but I am unfamiliar with Toyotas as this is my first..

I have a 1972 Fj-40, recently optained...the transfer case is leaking between the ebrake drum and the rear output shaft. Is this seal simple to fix? Is it like a pinion seal, where I can replace it without tearing open the case? Not sure how many t-cases Toyota has/had back then, so not sure which one I have. The shift pattern is 2 hi is up, pull the handle straight down to engage 4 hi, then one sideways (to the pass. side) for neutral, and one more sideways for 4 low. Thanks.

You should have what's known as a three speed transfer case, since it came behind the three speed tranny originally. That's assuming it wasn't swapped out with a four speed case to go behind a four speed tranny!

You can change the seal without tearing down the transfer, but you'll probably need a speedy sleeve to go over the parking brake drum as it tends to groove badly.

Another option is to get hold of Gary Kardum at Mudrak Cruisers

He makes a pretty trick double seal output for the tranny that cures the grooved drum problem nicely

Good luck!

I just put a new seal & speedy-sleeve on mine. Wish I knew Mudrak had a better set up before I did it... oh well, I'll know for next time:shaking:
