okay...I'd been driving my jeep around unregistered for 6 months and the day I bought my trailer and was taking the jeep to the trailer I actually got pulled over and got 2 tickets. both fix it tickets one mud flaps and the other registration. Let's say smogging the jeep is out of the questions so registration is not an option. What do I need to do at the DMV if I want to take the jeep off the road. as far as cancelling all kinds of stuff? It's non-op now that means no driving but I need to do something about this soon. junk slip? or how does this stuff work.

Get a green sticker for it.

California Vehicle Code Section 38002: All OHV's must be registered and display a current green sticker when operated on public lands. Section 38001 states that OHV's used exclusively on private land do not require a green sticker. Section 38088 specifies that a vehicle used for closed course racing must register and receive an orange sticker ($3.00 for the life of the bike) if it does not have a green sticker. Section 38020 states that a valid registration sticker must be displayed on the vehicle while being transported. Vehicles with a valid street license do not require off-highway registration, however a "dual registration" is available for those who wish to support the green sticker program even though their vehicle or motorcycle is street legal.

your lucky they did not impound your rig. my buddy owns a tow company and the cops around here will tow a vechile for lack of registration. then they keep it until you show current regestration or 30 days which ever comes first. a 30 day impound will run you about 1200 dollars. the tow company puts a lein on you rig when they tow you in. if you leave your rig there for 45 days they own it.

moral of the story. drive your unregestered rig on the road or even leave it parked on the street and you are going to loose it.

pay your fine to the court and be glad they did not take your heep away.

I think you missed the point dawg :D

I'll be paying the fix it fee....it has been paid non-op....and I just need to know what to show the court when I take it off the road and green it.

cops around here will tow a vechile for lack of registration.

from what I understand if it's expired for 6 or more months and they can take it anytime they want

You will also need to take you vehicle down to DMV for an inspection. They are not going to give you a green sticker without looking at your vehicle.

Phil you should go for the Green sticker now then work on a special purpose or special built registration later.
Similar to what they do for street legal sand rails or home built vehicles.

If you don't want to register it right now I'm pretty sure you can just pay a fine and leave it unregistered. If I remember correctly it's around $75.

Yes, the police can tow your car if it is on the street and the registration is expired for 6 months or more.
