I was in a junk yard yesterday and saw an old IH S-150 series truck. I found the information plate but the only thing you could make out was the numbers stamped into the metal. The numbers were: L-110, 115, 97422, 90, SD-220, 3600, 4200, 17786

It was a 2 wheel drive truck with duel rears.

Any idea what the real axle is on this thing? It was a really cool old truck.

We'll you've got a couple of things going here. First, stamped plate on the truck is incorrect for the truck. The L-110 is the model number of the truck the plate was originally on. Another clue is the 115, which would have been the wheelbase. The 97422 wold be the serial number of the chassis. 90 would be the HP. SD-220 is the engine size and the 3600 is max operable RPM and 4200 is max rpm. The 17786 would be the engine serial number.

The rear axle is most likely a coperate IH axle, but who know if it's still stock, as the data plate is wrong. If you thinking about using if for a project, don't. There is NO aftermarket for the axle and brake parts would be one big pain to replace.

They were, all things considered, that truck probably had a GVWR at or near 25000 pounds. Bigger was always better back then!!
