: Rewelding frame rails on SII

K, well after sandblasting till I had sand itching in places I didn't even know existed, I got looking at the factory welds holding the frame rail pieces together. They looked like a jr. high welding class learning to stick weld with bailing wire and a car batery. I stoped blasting and started to go back over all the factory welds with plenty of 6011 that I had laying around.

I have run in to problems with the weld not holding before with spring mounts and the steering box mount (RHD).

anybody else do this? suggestions?

The welds holding the C channel together on my 800 frame are garbage to. i just haven't gone through it yet to fix it. drive it till it breaks.:D

I would make sure to grind out the old welds before re-welding. This will give the new weld a place to "lay", you'll get better fusion and it will look better also. I'm not sure why just the steering box mounts and spring mounts would give you trouble

What is the trouble exactly? Weld not wetting into the base metal properly? Contamination?

It appears that the entire frame had been welded with about 4 rods. It just appeared that they cranked up the amperage and drug it along the seam. They did it so fast that there is very little weld holding the frame rail halfs together. The clamping force of the ps box and bolts pulled the old weld in two. A leaf spring mount fatigued the frame rail weld near to it and broke free (interesting experiience).

I am almost done welding it now. I've put almost 6 lbs of 6011 in it and it looks much better. I'll get some pics on the way of the old weld before I go over it all.

I will be linking and 1-ton big blocking it so the frame needs to be as strong as the rest of the drive train.

yeah my spring hangers were like that to... bad enough for one to rip off the frame, so i cut them both off and made some new ones and made sure they were welded better.

Can you post some pictures?

The welds do seem insufficient on the Scout IIs. The Big Scout at one time had both frames rails spilt open at the welds in the middle of the truck about 30" on each side. Hitting on rocks really opened it up. :shaking: A full skid plate protects the frame now. :smokin:

The scout frames suck donkey ass. I don't know how many times I heard how Scouts had a real frame

I've re-welded more sections then I can count. Make sure any brackets cradle the frame rails with .250 backer plate or they will tear through the frame.

I would, IF I were running leaf springs in the Scout 2.2

Boy oh boy, and to think ~ scouts are known for having strong frames. I've always thought that if these are strong, what do the other guys have :shaking:

arent the front shackles designed to come off on a front end impact? sounds ust wrong to me but I thought I herd that somewhere.

ask a group of scout II owners that wheel if they have torn off a shackle mount and 75% would say yes, the other 25% arent wheeling hard enough.

Yes, that's true. They were made to come off so you didn't do more damage to the axle assembly. Problem is that they would come off if you hit a curb, pot hole, or squirrel at over 2mph:shaking: that's why I have been selling the hell out of those gussets. People like the security of knowing their shit is gonna stay attached.

After seeing those pics I find myself looking over my 74'. I think it may be a good ideal for me to do some frame work on mine before I put in the 1 ton axles and 38inch tires.

Looks like someone glued it together.

On my buddies racer, the hanger punched completly though the bottom of the frame, solved that with a 12" chunk of 5/16thx3" angle. Still gotta redo the other side, assuming he is still racing.

having seen tons of jeep frames i can tell ya the scouts DO have strong frames. at least compared to the jeeps. can't tell ya how many times i crawled under an older jeep to find patches all over the frame.
