: 727 to a 205?

I did a little searching, not much though, and now I'm wondering. Can a 205 be bolted to a 727? I know I have the length to run duel cases but my body tunnel isn't long enough. So I believe my second option is to run a low geared 205. That will still be stronger and lower than the stock setup I have. So what trickie adapters do I need?

You can find 727 with the married 205. I believe they use the same round pattern as the Dana 300, all you would have to do is swap the tailshaft and housing onto an IH 727 case and mount up the 205. Course, this is after finding all the needed parts. I believe the last one I saw was behind an early 90's Cummins. I am sure there is other applications, but don't know of any. It exsists, I just don't know where to go looking for it.

Mid 80's dodge ram chargers came with 727's and np205's in holy matramony (sp?), I've seen it.

You will probalby be better off gettting out and searching junkyards than searching the internet on this one.

I don't think it's the same pattern. A friend of mine made the mistake of using his jeep D300 adapter to drill holes for his Ford 205 on his doubler project and they were not the same, close, but not the same. Might have been the same circle but the holes on the 205 are so that it can only put on one way.

That was the fisrt thought. But I'm having a hell of time finding a 727/203 bolted together locally. then finding the correct 205? then who builds the best adapter(w/out thrashing anyone)?

There is a lengthy 203/205 thread here in IH forum where a LOT was discussed about doublers. I am personally kind of partial to the ORD Gen II. :flipoff2:

Those lower geared JB 205's (http://www.jbconversions.com/pages/products/lomax205/index.html) is one way to go, but if your not running a big block, look at the 4sp Atlas (http://www.partsmike.com/old/aaAtlasTC.htm). You still would need the Jeep tail shaft and housing to bolt up the Atlas with no adapters. Or maybe a STaK box (http://www.stak4x4.com/products_tcase.htm) The 3 to 1 gears for the D20 can also still be found DC4wd (http://www.dc4wd.com/) he had them last year. All those underlined items are links

IMHO Dana 20's arn't even strong enough for a stock 304 with an auto and 33's. Go with the 205.

Maybe the Dodge 1 tons, but if it was in a ramcharger it was swapped in. Should have been a 208.

Ahhh, I remember now that the ramcharger I saw it on had 3/4 ton dodge axles swapped in. Unit bearing 8-lug dana 44 for the front. Must have been some other swapping as well.

Talked to the guy at STAK this morning(very nice guy) I really want his 3 speed monster box. So now, All I need is the adapter and shaft from the Jeep 727. Is that available new anywhere? Looks like it'll be hard to find:confused:

Look at a 727 from a wagoneer. It should work for you.

Heres Backcountrybinders (http://www.backcountrybinders.com/) might have one, or watch E-bay. There are plenty here at the local JY, but they will only sell the whole transmission around $100 and you pull it.

$100 for a whole trans isn't too bad. I've bought several output shafts and tail housings separately and people generally want close to the same amount (if not more) just for those two parts separately as a whole trans costs. Besides, that way you have spare trans parts if needed too.

Unfortunately, the older 4x4 transmissions for stuff I work on are drying up around here so it is costing me more. :(

I am still working on making my adapter for the Ford 205 to IH 727. The trans does have a standard 23 spline output (same as Dodge) and Advance Adapters has a 23 spline female to 31 spline male spud shaft coupler for mating a Ford 205 behind the NV4500 (light duty) dodge trans. Then I am cutting my own plates and center tube for the actual adapter. Perhaps I will be able to write more with pics later this summer but for now I am stuck on dial up and have moved to a new location.

Are you running a drivers side front drive line? or plan on running the 205 upside down?

It's pass. side and the Ford 205 will be run right-side-up.....then again, I do have a right-hand-drive Scout. The other right-hand-drive on Rockwells has the IH T-19 with Ford output shaft/Ford 203/and upside down 205 for a drivers side front driveline.

I had to read that 3x to get it straight... Funny....
