if they were in an old wrangler dont you think they would bolt up to a 258?
every automatic Jeep (universals, not fullsize/XJ's,etc) from 1980 on up used them

The spline counts arethe same (23) but i believe the transfercase-case input gear for the TF999 is a little longer than the one for the AX15.
I've priced them before as I think mine is about to die, rebuilt ones i've seen them from $800-$1200 on different internet sites. They may be hard to find used on junk jeeps concidering they are rare. I've only seen like 3 or 4 auto YJs in person.

They were in CJ's from 1980-1986 also, behind the 258's bolted to a D300. You may want to look for a 727, more common, more readily available parts, from a wagoneer, stronger, will bolt to a 258 & a D300 also.

I agree with Mel. Find a TF727 out of a Wagoneer. They're more plentiful in the junkyards, stronger, bolt right up to a 300.

if i remember correctly the 727's clutch packs are about 1.5 times the size of the 999's. im not 100% though.
the 999's clutchs are very small to begin with if you can go for something beefy'er. im still running the 999 because when i nuked' it i didnt have the time or money to do a tranny swap so i just rebuilt it.

Have you ever looked under one of those stupid looking 80's 4 door Eagle wagons? They came with a 258, a dana 300 bolt pattern, and 23 splines. They are the exact same tranny they used in the 6 cyl auto CJ's. Around here you can get a whole Eagle wagon for $75. Tons of parts are shared with the CJ's.
Hope this helps.

I don't know where in Texas you are but a search on www.car-part.com came up with these two yards that have 999's
1. http://www.chryslerheaven.com/ It's in Fort Worth and they listed a price of $315.
2. http://www.asapmotors.com/ They are in Houston and listed a price of $495.
If you want a 727 there are about 25 choices. Try the website if you are interested.

Forget about a 9... spend the money on a 727.
