get a skate style helmet. it is made for multipul impacts.

Mountain bike and MX helmets are designed for single impact. Unless you have the money for a new helmet everytime it gets bashed. Stick to the skate style.

Skate helmets are not DOT approved... RCAA and UROC require DOT approved helmets. Im not sure if ProRock does or not.

I'm not a competitor so I'm not talking from a position of experience, but I used to ride competitive Motocross in my younger days and I had many opportunities to put my helmet to good use. Please, do yourself a favor and buy the best possible helmet you can afford! It's your life you're playing with. Skating helmets aren't gonna get the job done in a serious rollover! Regardless of the minimum requirements, I would also recommend a full-face helmet to provide jaw and mouth protection.

RockCrawling competitions are becoming more and more competitive. It's time that the safety equipment requirements step up as well.

I just picked up a helmet for UROC a few weeks ago. I got a 3/4 DOT snell 2200 helmet for $80, and they had a cheaper model, about the same thing made out of a different material, for $50. Local motorcycle shop had a pretty good selection.

I tried on some 1/2 helmets, but the last rollover gave me a bunch of staples in my head that I'm not sure a 1/2 would have prevented. I haven't worn a full, but it seems that it might impair visibility more than desired for rockcrawling. 3/4 seems just about right.

I think I'll probably wear it even outside of competition sometimes, as discussed in another thread a month or so ago.

After I got my head busted open once, I'm a little more careful now.

You can kinda see it in this pic.

get one with jaw protection over here, for any soft top, you must have an AS1698 approved helmet, we have added jaw protection to ours, and you can clip earphones and microphones into them for communication to your spotter :smokin:

Bob lets you use bike helmets, mutlisport helmets etc. It's your brain.

I watched Sam Patton rattle his head (no helmet) a little over a year ago and get a helicopter ride (and a hefty bill). By the way caused by way to much go pedal, totally avoidable.

I tried full face DOT- vision limited and tought to hear your spotter. I use a multisport deal now and I'm comfortable with that decision. It does have some roll bar paint on it though I haven't turtled yet. good luck and see you there!

If you are wearing your saftey harnesses how are your heads getting hit? On the rocks???????

A roll can be extremely voilent! Especially in competition. Your head can hit rocks, the cage, etc. Safety harnesses are great, but you need to protect yourself in the event of a belt failure.

Imagine large pointy rock, going between the tube and into your head.

FYI: Simpson makes a DOT approved motorcycle helmet that, style wise, is very similar to the skater brain buckets. It doesn't provide any lower face protection, but it won't limit your vision like a full face helmet either.

For full face go with the motocross style vs. the road racer type. They have a larger opening. I freind of mine rooled his SCCA road race car and hit the cage hard enough to break his helmet. His 5 point harness stretched. And we had put vice grips on the tail ends and pulled them as tight as we could get them before he went out. I was 6'3" 210 at that time all mussle. The webbing in the harness just streched plus the body compresses too.
