I found a centersection at a junkyard, tubes cutoff, but they only want 20 bucks for it.
What am I looking at for re-tubing it and building it? Anyone done it?
Is it worth it?

Are you talking about for a rear axle?
If it's a rear and you want standard rotation for the rear then i would just get a complete axle. We get D60 rears for $100-$130 at the pick n' pull all day down here. that gives you a lot more to work with.
Now if it's a HP60 center chunk, then yes $20 is a very good price. GET IT!

either or?
In theory, I could make a front axle out of it too. I have looked in just about every junkyard in Indiana for a d60 front, and haven't found a single one.
I don't think that tubing it is the problem, I think that finding the inner/outer knuckles, and the rest of the crap would get damn expensive.
I just hate to see a perfectly good D60 centersection go to waste. :D :flipoff2:

You need to figure out what you want to do first. 60 front or rear, HP or standard, full width or cut down, driver side or passenger (CJ so I asssume passenger). You might not find one in a yard but passenger side drop 60s can be found easily, however rarely are they cheap. Buy that center chunk for a front and you'll easily have into it what you could've bought a complete one for.
I would only build a front from scratch for a couple reasons- a high tech center section/knuckles are desired, HP passenger drop desired, a light weight 60 desired (CRMO tubes/ .5 ton discs/ 5 on 5.5/ etc.), or a HP rear. Otherwise I'd find a complete one with your desired drop and either run it full-width or cut it down. You'll end up saving money in the end.

What about if you do use it for the front...can you put seals in the chunk or do you have to machine it?

If you are looking to build a rear out of then save yourself the time and $$$ and just get a whole one. To retube it you will have to torch out the plug welds, press out the tubes, clean it up, buy some DOM to press back in at about $30 pr ft., and then need ends to put on the new tubes.
To make a frontend youll need a frontend for the parts so no gain. If you find all the outter parts then sure it can work but getting those parts can be hard and/or spendy.

don't waste your $, even if it's only $20, D60 rears are not that hard to come by. We go to pick and pulls any day of the week and can walk out with 3 or 4 D60 full floater rears any where from $150-$250, last time we came out with 2 w/trak loks and sold those making the axles even cheaper, the cost of retubing is MUCH MORE expensive as stated. If you're doing a front D60 keep your eyes out here or do some calling, we usually pick them up for around $1000-$1300 complete ford/chevy depending on the gears.....too bad it isn't the good old days when Boyce sold them used for $1200, I think they want around $2500 (last I heard anyways)
