Yeah,
I think an operation called "environtest" has the contract. New cars 4 years, semi new 2, and junk like mine every year.

oh yeah,

33"max tire on the rollers I believe......

last time i checked...a few months ago...they had no emisions! it was a 20 minute procedure to get an 84 cruiser registered. no testing at all! unless they just started this.... :rasta:

Colorado has emmisions testing along the front range only. Pretty sure no emmisions in Junction.

Along the front range: '82+, IM240 test every 2 years; '81-, idle test yearly; all diesel, yearly dyno test.

Depends what county you're in, some do, and some don't. Here's an example, Denver does, Messa county does not.

...And even though I live in the Front Range, my junk doesn't get tested at all. "Collector vehicle" plates, baby. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

The scary part is, it's a 76 FJ40 from California, and it appears that all the emissions stuff still works. It passed the test when I bought it with flying colors. At least now I can put a diesel in it and not have to worry about the legality of it at all!

Ok guys...how closely do they check the engine you have in there? I have an 87YJ and need to replace the 258 in it. The only ones I am finding are older ones. How much difference does this really make and will they check that closely? :roxy:

When I had the testing done (at the station in Broomfield, btw) late last year when I bought my '40, they didn't appear to look too closely at much of anything . I'm sure the computer prints out a list of emission controls to look for, the trained monkey plays "find the system," and you fail if you don't have them all.

Given the purely visual nature of that part of the inspection, I'd venture to say that those components don't have to be working, just present and accounted for. ;)

So I'd suggest (informational purposes only, IANAL, yadda yadda yadda) that you make sure it at least looks like all the required bits and pieces are there. Don't forget to tune up the engine as well as you can to pass the sniffer part of the test! There are plenty of places to find "how to pass emissions" kind of information for engine tuning etc. Look those up if you need to, as well.

Good luck!

Roxy, I'd be really suprised if you had a problem. Basically, as long as you can pass a basic visual inspection (along with the actual tailpipe emmisions of course), you should be fine. The part about the (semi) trained monkeys is correct, as long as you have the required parts on it you should be fine. And remember you'll need 33's or smaller.

for example,
I had a well modified porsche turbo, and took it in to the test center. The "monkey" opened the hood, scratched his head and promptly shut the hood, and pressed visual inspection complete! I don't think they care too much as long as the numbers come out....

you're totally fine. I took my 72 Bronco with a 93 5.0SEFI in to be tested in Boulder when i brought it into the state. They tested it as a 72 and obviously it passed with flying colors. Also they had to do a VIN inspection which was a joke too. My VIN is on my glovebox door which isn't attached to the truck. I brought the glovebox door with me and the guy goes "just dictate the VIN to me and i'll write it down."
